When my parents' Lab died in 2018, I figured it would be their last dog. they were getting up there in years and my mother was in the beginning stages of what turned out to be alzheimers. But she absolutely insisted they get another puppy. It couldn't have worked out better. He was so affectionate and very protective of my mother. He never let her out of his sight. When she eventually moved into a nursing home and had forgotten most everybody else, she still would ask about the dog. My dad lasted two more years after my mother died and he was a faithful companion for my dad too.
I have him now and he's lying down at my feet as I type this. I've had some other people offer to take him but there's no way I'm giving him up. For the rest of his life he gets the best of everything.

I am so sorry man. when our dog started feeling bad, we took her in and she was gone within 4 days. it was hard as frick, and I still miss her every day - but know you gave her a damn good life, and she was happy.

You and your family need to be there with her when they put her down. She more than likely knows its her time and her only regret is not knowing if you and your family are going to be OK. Her whole life has been about making sure you are safe. You may not want the kids in there, but at least you and/or your wife need to be.

TIGERHOLD, have you ever owned a golden retriever? I’m an old guy. I have had lots of dogs. I’ve had some great mutts. My golden retriever is eleven years old and is seriously the best dog ever. My wife keeps saying no more dogs after this one. I think she might cave in though.
I don’t think I could ever own another dog breed after having a golden.
OP. I am so sorry for your loss. Yes you should get two golden puppies. I volunteer to dog sit for you if you ever need it.

I’m so sorry. Good idea on the puppy, but think about 2. I don’t know goldens, 2 may be ok, but my breed types can develop littermate syndrome about the time of sexual maturity so 2 same age / too close in age not recommended. As well, if you get 2, be sure to train separately and give attention separately to so they aren’t so bonded and you are nothing. Again, sorry about your precious Lucy. It’s so hard.

We currently have my MIL’s 10 year old yorkie mix. She lost her mom, dad, and dog brother within 2 years but she’s still the sweetest, happiest girl.

Sorry for your loss. It is the curse of having dogs, but they are worth the heartbreak.

Lost my golden in 2020 and waited 4 years to get another. That was a mistake. Please get another one for your kids ASAP. You won't regret it...even with all the vacuuming. :)
I have read that you should not get siblings, so you might want to look into that if you get 2.

Sorry for your loss. A good dog will make you realize how shitty humans can be. My Dogs haven't crossed the rainbow bridge yet, because the poem goes:
I'm sure your dog will wait for you to cross that bridge together.
