Update on Parents with Corona

My dad (59) is currently on day 11 of being sick with the Corona Virus. He had low fever yesterday (it has not gone past 100.8) but, according to my mom, he is feeling much better today. He started coughing about 2 days ago and that is supposedly getting better as well.
My mom (60) started getting sick about 9 days ago and we were sure it was corona. The Dr. even preemptively diagnosed her as having it. Today her test came back as negative. That is almost hard to even comprehend because she spent the first few days in the same bed as my dad while he was sick. They have somewhat quarantined in different rooms but are sharing the same living space, kitchen, and even eating together.
I know this is an extremely small sample size but I think it is important to know that there are corona cases that are relatively benign. We all had the flu in January and it was 10x as bad. This somewhat supports the evidence that actually contracting the virus requires prolonged exposure.

Thanks for sharing. It certainly helps to hear such stories when the media showers us with the horror stories.

My grandmother (94) is currently on day three of her battle with it.
Don’t want to jinx it but she’s doing OK so far. We’re all aware of the outlook for someone her age but trying to remain positive.

How long did it take for her test results to come back?
False negatives can happen. I've heard from a close source of one ICU pt initial tested as Neg and the Dr had it retested and then tested positive.

I will be praying. Anyone who makes it to 94 is undoubtedly tough so stay positive. I am sure that's what she would want you guys to do!

6 days. I think her symptoms corroborate with her not having it but I am sure a false negative is possible, however unlikely that may be.

My mom's symptoms are much more like a cold but my dad's are what you would think of as the flu. He started with a low fever and scratchiness in his throat. Next came the body aches and drowsiness. Now he is coughing and has diarrhea.

Another misunderstanding. The vulnerability of old people is mostly due to old people having more underlying conditions, not because they’re old. People between 70 and 80 survive this virus at about a 95% clip.

She might want to still assume she might have it or had it or infected after test while eating with your dad, and self quarantine especially if feeling sick (not sure how long she felt sick from 9 days ago). In case she really doesn't she might still have to isolate from your dad.
We don't have much info on sensitivity of tests yet to know rate of false negatives or even tests specificity to know false positives. I assume any false positive will have to have more tests to be declared recovered, but with testing limited false negatives might not as easily be retested unless they get worse and/or illness lingers.
Edit: false negative was already brought up.

Agree. It is just really hard to know what to think.
Good friend is a house sup at a hospital in the area, and he is not really the sensationalist type at all. Yet he was pretty seriously warning us about grocery stores/packaging in regards to the virus, and he said his hospital is only a few days away from being completely out of necessary materials.
When someone you trust, who you know isn't the type to buy into hysteria, says something like that.. man, it just confuses you.
Another friend is an ER physician in Houston and he's been in an AirBnb for over 2 weeks so as to not infect his asthmatic wife and young children. Again, not at all the type of person to be screaming end of the world in these situations.
I guess for now I'm somewhere in the middle. Taking it seriously, but not panicking.

For sure. They will be quarantined from the public for a while and they have done their best to isolate from each other after my dad's test came back positive. I was just trying to make the point that, for at least this specific case, the virus is not as easy to contract as some people are making it out to be. If she had corona symptoms then I might have an easier time believing that it was a false negative. If she does actually have it, then the symptoms are incredibly light despite her age (60) and the fact that she is not as healthy as my dad. Either way, they are at least one example of the sickness not being that bad. Now, how generalizable is their experience? I have no idea. I just wanted to show some positive results amongst all of the negativity.

I work in healthcare (RN) and we were told that most cases one was in the same room for 4 hours or longer and within 6 feet from a carrier. Very few random cases. Btw I have swabbed numerous people for COVID with no positives to this date. Now influenza A has made a nice comeback.

I was curious if that was adding to the hysteria. I have multiple buddies who are currently sick or just getting over being sick but they do not think it is corona. I wonder if having a bad flu season on top of corona is compounding the panic?

Yes. Anytime someone has a cough or congestion and especially a fever people freak out. Diarrhea, no taste, a dry cough, and a fever are the big tell alls. Even those don't guarantee a positive result.
