why wouldn't the person selling the old zippo for $2 sell it for more then?

Interesting and hope you make it there soon.

Here is one "easy on the pocket book" way:
Join the armed forces, go through basic training, and asked to be stationed in Japan.
Uncle Sam pays for travel and expenses, and you will even get even a housing allowance. It might take a few years. Basic training, more training, and a few station assignments before you get your prefered choice.
Just have to be in shape unlike the Texas National Lardarses.
See the world on Uncle Sam's Dime.

Because to them it's clutter and they want it gone but not trashed.

We do this with coins, silver and gold. Plenty of people have no idea what stuff is worth. Had a lady and her husband come in with a roll of gold US coins. They were looking to sell/exchange at $10 because that's what they were. They were shocked when the offer was much much higher. She had given 2 away, and showed back up a week later with them to sell.

An old friend of mine who was a Marine Corps Vietnam veteran said "Join the Marines! Travel the world! Meet interesting people! Then kill them."
He also said "We're here to win your hearts and minds.....and burn down your fricking village."

I don’t need to do eBay for supplemental income, I do it as a hobby,
Look i"m not knocking it, I love to flip for the same reason. It's a rush to find a nice pair of shoes at Goodwill or a piece of art at an antique store that I can double or triple on ebay. I just always have the those questions in my mind, could I go write a few work emails and sell something that would result in a higher finder's fee than selling a $100 item on ebay for $200.

I’m way past that point. I have a disability rating of 70% right now

That’s just it, I don’t hunt to double my money, I look for 25:1 payback or higher. I settle for 10:1, and try to avoid anything less than 3:1.
I will buy a huge lot at (let’s say $100). I know one of the items is worth over $100. I sell it real quick, and then sell the other items for pure profit, no matter the value. That’s where most of my $15-$25 sold items come from.
I average over $50 an item sold on eBay. Right now, over the last 90 days, I’ve averaged $57+ per item (that does include money collected for shipping).
About 3 months ago, it was near $70 an item.

Maybe it will start snowballing. I hope it does. I say that because, being that you’ve set a goal of $8,000 for the trip and you’ve made $133 in 5 months, that means, at your current earning rate, you will reach your goal in a little over 25 years.
