So you're upset that some wine was destroyed? I like wine too, but frick all that wine. People have died from these fires and some have lost every fricking thing they own.
It's unbelieveable that some folks seem to only be upset because some wineries and their stock were destroyed.

I thought one of the worst sights I would ever see was my Lakeview hood post-Katrina, but that drone footage is apocalyptic. Looks like Hiroshima. Simply not much debris to haul off.

Are they expecting to find those missing people in the ashes, or expecting that they'll check in with someone eventually?

The wet winter has really hurt us out here. Fires were only a mile from where I live in Orange County. I have some pretty crazy pictures.

Reports are that cell service is out in many areas. Hopefully the majority of that number is safe but unable to contact others.
ETA: More reports are coming in with 650+ missing person reports.

This is horrible.
On a selfish note I hope it stays clear of downtown Yountville, our yearly pilgrimage to the area is coming up and the French Laundry is the high point of the trip every year.

The origin is unkown but the spread is due to severe wind and a lengthy drought.

Damn. My brother lives in Sonoma right near downtown and he's pretty worried about the fire spreading to the neighborhood

23 are now confirmed dead due to the wildfires and as of Thursday morning, 285 missing person reports are still unresolved.

This is my line of work (fire) I respond to these fires across the state annually. This one has a couple of things that caused this. first 90 mph wind gusts blowing east to west. when it gets this fast, and this big, the big dog will eat, and we will watch. Nothing we can do to stop fire like this. second. rains were good last year, providing lots of grass growth with lots of continuous fuel. With a continuous fuel bed, its on... It'll run to the ocean. I'm in Orange county, we released a ton of fire engines this morning, they went right to Sonoma/wine country. all up there stay safe. OC gets the big blast of wind again this weekend.

This has to be one of the most unpredictable natural disasters with some of the worst destruction.
It sucks that this is getting such little attention here. I feel bad bumping this thread every day but 29 people have died and thousands have lost their homes. People should know.

this may have been posted already but Charles Schulz's house in Santa Rosa was destroyed and his widow is safe but had to flee. The peanuts museum though is safe at the moment

Winds are expected to pick up again and there's no rain expected for at least the next few days. From the numbers, it looks like they are tackling the smaller fires, perhaps the ones in more populated areas.
As for the larger Tubbs / Atlas / Redwood fires, all they can do is watch. These fires are eating up tens of thousands of acres with < 10% containment.

I wonder how the cause of the fire factors into this (arson/lightning, etc). Would suck if insurance companies could get away with not paying out if it is determined to be arson.
