Dumb question but you think if you got in your swimming pool you could survive the blaze? Or would the smoke still kill you no matter what....

At the rate the fires are moving, it's not a bad idea. I've read a few articles saying people stayed in their pool coming up briefly for air. You would have to pray though that nothing collapsed on top of it.

Reports are coming out that a couple attempted to stay in their pool while the fire passed and the wife (75) died of smoke inhalation. Story.

Lots of elderly folks still unable to get out.

Death toll at 35. Over 200,000 acres scorched.

This is an unreal event. God be with the families affected.

It's no joke out here. about 20% of everyone here in SF is wearing masks in the financial district. I can barely see the bay bridge from my office- usually in full view. no end in sight yet. 25% contained now, which is an improvement from yesterday, but they are predicting wild winds this weekend. Could go either way- just have to hope for the best.

All these elderly- just heartbreaking. Isn't the treatment of the old folks how you judge a society?

Short answers:
Q1: Yes. One couple spent six hours in their pool.
Q2: Probably not. Apparently the rising heat draws the smoke up and it isn't completely suffocating in a pool.

My sister lives in the Bay Area and has a "cabin" on the Russian River about ten miles from Santa Rosa. She has several friends who have lost their homes. One was woken up at 2:45am Sunday by a cop banging on her door. They left the house in less than 45 minutes. The house burned within the next couple of hours.

The smoke is bad in Lafayette (east of Oakland, just west of Walnut Creek). Weekend sporting events and a Boy Scout popcorn sale have been cancelled. Her boys are wearing N95 masks on the walk to and from school. No outside recess, staying inside after school, etc. It's an inconvenience compared to losing your home (or life), but no end is in sight for now.

Re: Missing Persons
One person can get reported by multiple people to multiple agencies. My sister doesn't think that there are anywhere near ~400 bodies left to find, although that many are still missing. As more accurate lists of evacuees in shelters, motels and at the homes of relatives and friends are cross referenced with the missing list, the number is expected to drop drastically. Hopefully she's right.

Bodycam Footage from Sonoma County Deputy rescuing a disabled woman (BBC.com)

It's pretty wild how close to becoming overtaken by the fire these brave rescuers get.

Check out some of the videos from the Ft McMurray fires a year or two ago. People are driving out on a two lane road with fire about 30' high on both sides of the road. Crazy!

Saw the "Driving through Hell" vid... Felt bad for the guy on the motorcycle. He had to be feeling the heat.

I actually have a Top 3 driving out of a fire vid list:

3. Welcome To Hell - Driver Escapes Fort McMurray Fire

2. Russian "Fire Tourists" Barely Escape - TONS of tension as these guys actually get hit by a falling, flaming tree.

1. Chalet Village Fire - Gatlinburg, TN - "Escape From Hell" Full Length Vid by Michael Luciano - Best combo of scenery and commentary. Don't let the 14min vid time stop you from watching this one.

ETA:

#1 is NSFW for language.

I felt like I was watching a movie and not real life. Freaking crazy.

Very Silent Hill-ish

That's insane.

I've driven down hwy 90 several times while they were burning the cane. It was strange as hell but no where near as surreal as the body cam vids.
