You’re stupid. If you ever have a contractor do work for you and he asks for money upfront, just say no. If he needs money for materials, offer to pay for the materials directly. Especially on larger work. If he doesn’t pay his bills the vendor can have lien rights on your property.

That story is incredibly easy to verify. Play it cool with him, ask for the case number as you need to be able to verify his claim, and, if all checks out, have some patience.
