I suppose releasing Alfie to the Italians is viewed as some sort of weakness on the UK's part..?

Worst case scenario is Alfie goes to Rome....gets properly diagnosed...and lives a normal life.

they cant have that. The state (i.e., NHS) is infallible.

So why does the UK even care? I understand their initial decision (kind of) if the govt was paying for the care but if a foreign country wants to take the financial and manpower burden, how do they have any claim to not allow that?

Warning—Facebook link

This is a British “news” organization (more clickbait than anything), but look at the comments from the people on this. They’re perfectly okay with the government deciding this child’s fate and calling the parents selfish. Is the UK that brainwashed? WTF

We fought a war over the fact that the U.K. does not have free citizens. It has subjects.

The government gets to decide who lives and who dies. I can’t see that power being abused at all.... and people in this country want more government oversight and intrusion.

but also by the very creepy way the Brits defend this bull shite. The comments on the FB and every article are half save Alfie and half arse kissing Alder Hey and the NHS.

That's why I said I think it's ego and pride based from the filthy Brits. They could easily come out and and say "we've tried our best for over a year, due to costs we can no longer keep going" and they'd be viewed as world-wide good guys. The awful arguement they're using is saying what's "best" for the child. They're having a hard time convincing everyone that starving him to death is better than handing him over to the parents and Italian medical teams.

Probably not so much a conscience as they know people will frick them up if they see them in public

Trump should intervene. Remind them that we saved their asses in the 40’s and didn’t just say frick it like they are doing to him

The NHS has warned employees not to wear their uniforms in public.

you sound like a horrible person tbh

I don’t usually go for the appeal to emotion but these parents are losing a child, and the child is being held hostage by the state

If that happened to you and you weren’t upset, you’d be the nutcase friend.

That appears to be a British member of the EU parliament, not quite the same thing.
Especially now that UK is on its way out of the EU.

If I was this baby’s father I’d already be in jail for murder myself. And god damn right I would.

All my Brit friends defended the government.
I told them I was embarrassed for them.
None had a valid reason for denying the kid from going to Italy.

Some of them even said Americans probably would have shot him by now with our guns.

I told them I’m glad we threw that fricking tea in the harbor and kicked their asses. And apparently someone needs to do it again.

This is why I laugh at people that suggest that one of the original justifications for the second amendment is no longer applicable. I bet the UK government is damn glad they don’t have an armed populace right now.

If this were happening in the US there would be riots and blood in the streets if it came to that.

I believe he did intervene and offer for Charlie Ward to be treated here. I would like to see it done in this case as well. Incredible times we live in that this can go on without widespread outrage.
