I've been closer, as in inside a building as it was hit by one, before. Couldn't really hear a whole lot of anything though because we all huddled into a small room in the middle of the building that was constructed of 10" thick concrete. When we walked outside, though, was a different story. Damage everywhere. It was rated an EF-2.

Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't have stood so close to the power lines, especially when you can see arcs in the background as it's passing over them.

Yea, I'm wondering what that is too. Maybe some form of old, broken down blown in insulation? I don't know.
