My understanding is the US does this about once a year to challenge Chinese authority over islands in the S China Sea. If China can allow the US Navy to pass right by them then they’re making an international statement that they can’t defend the area thus having a bogus claim. Maybe not that exact thing, but it’s something like that.

And the other key component: airbases outside of China. We literally have airbases all over the planet. Also, we literally have 11 airbases that float and 9 small airfields that float.
