RIP Captain McCurley. I didn’t know him very well, but knew that he was a good man. Quiet, but smart. We were promoted on the same day to Captain right after Katrina. He most certainly would have made it to District Chief had he not passed.

Only the good die young.

In some ways, I think that was actually better. No fighting over insurance, no taking weeks for water to drain, no issues over mitigations needed, etc. You say, that sucks, send me the policy value, and can immediately start rebuilding.

How many landfalls did Katrina make? 4? 1 in Florida, 1 in Mississippi, 2 in Louisiana?

Spot on. My brother lives in the Pass and it was like someone set a bomb off in his house. The house was a beautiful historic home over 100 years old that survived multiple storms before Katrina

Mississippi got it worse than Louisiana is Katrina.

There, I said it.

Eerie! No creatures or sounds. NO flies, butterflies, mosquitos, birds, squirrels; heck no crickets.

We were about 20 miles inland in Mississippi. No flooding, of course, but the wind did a number on our house and land. It was a decade before the squirrels started coming back. My parents are happy (irritated?) to report that the squirrels are now back to full strength.

My wife’s uncle had a camp in Waveland directly across the street from the beach.

Had.

That Waveland / Ansley area was ground zero for the storm path pretty sure. Pretty incredible how far inland the damage was.

My grandparents lived at the corner of Scenic / Courtney. Built circa 1855. Their front door was 29 ft ASL. There was a 6’ watermark in what remained of the house. 3/4 of the 1st floor was washed out. They miraculously survived, staying upstairs When we arrived Monday, having to cut our way through downed trees on Menge & 2nd Street, thier pitch was leaning 30 degrees downward - with no 1st floor to support the 2nd floor. Miracle!

Good video. Pretty impressive how the firefighters kept their cool and went about the job. I know the first firefighter on the jet ski talking about 150 stranded people became a captain.
