The amount of people that are hiring managers that have no clue about what to look for is fairly common.
I never ask technical questions. If you’re the right fit, you can be taught. If you’re the right person, you’ll figure it out. Probably better than I can explain it. I can screen you in 3 minutes tell if you know what you’re doing or not.
I am 100% a believer in interviewing for the things that can’t be taught. How you think. How you communicate. How you work. What drives you? Your ability to relate to others. How do you take feedback? Hard feedback. That’s the things that matter.

First and foremost you are a VISITOR at the interview with someone you probably did not know beforehand.
Are you in the habit of dropping into people's house's and disrespecting their rules?
Since you don't know the specifics of the potential employer's rules, don't do unimportant shite that may piss them off. You are probably one of at least 10 interviewing.

I don't recall him saying there was a restriction against bringing a drink to an interview. Where is that even implied?
A person is free to bring whatever they want to bring to a job interview including their mother.
Whether that helps him get the job or not is a whole another issue.
I personally would view someone who had to bring food or drink to my job interview as not a serious prospect.

I work with a lot of Gen Z - they’ve never brought coffee to an interview. Is this really a thing?
Now if an interviewee brought me a coffee in addition to their coffee - they may get hired right away.
