This has been going on for about 2 years in Houma on hwy 311 coming out of ellendale CC. There has been multiple wrecks because of this. Cop is only out there from 7-8am. It's causes a pretty good backup at times. Cop lady walks out twirling her sign and people doing 55mph have to slam on brakes to let one damn car out.

My neighborhood used to do the same until they created another entrance. We still pay an off duty officer to patrol 6 pm to 6 am every night

Any word on the UClub back entrance? It looks like they’ve started it but don’t seem to be in a hurry.

so other than the 55MPH, its not much different than a school crossing guard or a school bus stopping to pick up kids?

UC HOA has engaged DOTD several times, DOTD offered no help

DOTD probably didn't offer any help because a condition of the original permit to connect to the highway probably didn't allow for a traffic signal.

this was one of the only solutions at this time.

No, it was just the most convenient solution for the residents of UC. They could leave earlier to go to work like the rest of the world, but that would require too much effort.

At the present time there is no connection from UC to Bluebonnet. There is site work being done for a development being called the lakes at harveston.

They could easily tie into Bayou Paul Rd and that would allow traffic to flow through the existing traffic light. Problem solved.

But they don’t want that bc the “crime” increase associated with multiple entrance neighborhoods.

still a waste of time and money even if it’s not illegal. They claim to be so broke but have money for this nonsense.

The officers are usually letting out buses. This isn’t as common as you think it is. This typically doesn’t occur on a major highway. It also doesn’t occur on a major highway that has two lanes.

Church shouldn’t be let out by officers either. However, this usually only occurs only one day of the week and not on a typical work day. This only happens at one church I know of and that is a four lane highway and typically lasts a very brief time.

The guy on highway 30 does this for at least an hour.

Please cite the authority that grants an off duty police officer to control traffic?

From what I've found, is an officer in official uniform and with a police car can conduct traffic operations. They can conduct them in a personal car in dire circumstances.
Or out of uniform with a police car in certain circumstances.

At no time can an off duty uninformed, police officer in a personal vehicle conduct traffic operations unless they see someone commit a non vehicular crime. (Other than serous vehicle crimes) .

Departments can set up their own rules, but that is the just of it.
An officer is always an officer.

If it's causing you to be late or stuck in traffic, maybe you should leave earlier to avoid the traffic

Can’t this same logic be used for the people in one neighborhood?

Shouldn’t they actually defer to the major highway as opposed to the people on the highesy deferring to them?

What about the wrecks this will inevitably cause?

It can be used for anyone, which is why it's a stupid argument to make.

I guess that's up to the officer that's out there to decide.

Have they caused any yet?

Will U Club be a part of St. George? I would imagine they could fix this issue.

It would be in St. George, but this is a state highway so I would assume LA DOTD would have to handle it.

I’m not saying an on duty cop couldn’t do it. Clearly they can provide traffic control. I want to know the specific law that allows for an off duty cop to provide traffic control, a citation as in a revised statute or ordinance.

Conparing LSU traffic to U club traffic is wholly different. You’re talking 90,000 people vs. 300. Also those guys are actually working overtime providing traffic control so they are on duty.

I’m not aware whether or not an accident has occurred because of it. I am aware of people having to slam on their brakes and drive onto the shoulder to avoid such wrecks.

I pray a person will be walking on or riding their bike on the shoulder at that time of day.

I guess you just want someone to die before it mush be dealt with.
