Now...imagine this in the late 1800s/early 1900s. It's unlikely anyone (other than the Tongans and any nearby ships) would know about this for weeks, long after the shockwaves and tsunami have hit.

Tonga has a population of 105k. How fricked are they?

Edit - just read that they weren’t that severely affected.

Was the four foot tsunami on the side of Tonga away from the explosion and the side of Tonga that was closer hasn't been heard from?

Link with some photos and the Hawaii tsunami advisory

Really dumb question, but I'm guessing from an ash/blacking out the sun perspective, an underwater volcano is better than a giant mountainous one right?

Yes.

If this volcano had been above the surface, the impacts would have been much more severe.

Seriously….how the hell does that thing blowing up not produce a tsunami More than 4 ft?

Just goes to show how much force is needed to move such a massive volume of water.

Also shows just how much of a badass that 9.0 earthquake was that fricked-up Japan back in '11.

I imagine they get numb to tsunami warnings like we do tornado warnings in the South.

Yeah, particularly on inside waters.

Who give af about SF and the west coast. Let’s all say a prayer for our Tongan brothers and sisters. Great people and a great culture. Always love to see Tonga playing rugby. I hope they are ok. I’m just seeing this now. Looks bad
