On Friday a dog showed up at my house with no collar or other identification. I've put posts on the Facebook and signs around my subdivision but no one has claimed him. Over the past weekend, I've become attached to this pup and I don't want someone to take him from me. He is much nicer than most pits I've come across.

How long should I wait until I claim him as my own and give him the home he deserves? Clearly, his previous owner(s) did not care or he wouldn't have been roaming the streets.

You can take it to the vet to see if it is chipped too.

Or shoot it and do us all a favor.

Just chain him to a tree in your front yard.. if the owner recognizes him when they pass by they’ll just take him if not then you have a great new guard dog

This is a good story so far.

Then you went too far for the OT. Nice bait though.

You tried.

If he/she isn't chipped, you should claim him BUT with the possibility that the owner may come back for him.

One pup I found (I have two that were found in the same way as OP) was chipped. The SPCA called the baw and he told them he didn't want his dog back

You typically need to make a reasonable effort to locate the owners, i.e. posting signs for a reasonable amount of time, bringing him to the vet to check for a microchip. Honestly, if you've done both things, you've done your duty, and if no one claims him he's yours.

Good on you for taking in the pup.

check him for a microchip. if he doesn't have one, he's yours. Unless someone starts looking for him (yeah right).

Let your children play alone with him, make him feel right at home.

When my dog showed up one day, I took him to the vet to see if he was microchipped. He wasn’t, they asked me if I wanted him microchipped with my name, and that was that. That was ten years ago and he’s been loyal as hell. Dumber than a sack of hammers, but loyal.

He’s a lab/Aussie shepherd mutt

Oh no, that's sad man.

Rough. Maybe take him to the shelter?

Oh ok. Yeah that's pretty understandable. I'd take him to the vet to get his shots done just to be safe if you plan on keeping him.

I would be willing to bet he was dumped. We adopted one like that. Was in neighbors front yards for a few week, like didn’t know where she was. Saw me feeding cats on front porch and eventually started to approach, but wouldn’t come to porch. I put food in bowl near side walk. We were BFF for a very long time. No one ever advertised or looked for her. People are the cruelest!!!

Don’t chain the dog to a tree.

If it decides to gnaw your face off while you sleep, you’ll know he likes you and wants to stay.

In the words of Bob Barker....never mind.
