re: UK decides "herd immunity" the way to go...

I think this is more to do with incorrect testing or a quick relapse. They few times this has happened, I believe it's been within days of someone thinking they were well. At one point China said the reinfections were pretty few. I'm far from being a doctor, but I'd think it is more of a relapse type thing where someone isn't fully healed and they try to resume normal activities only to have the virus take hold again. This has happened to me (non-corona obviously) many times b/c I'm a stubborn arse that doesn't like to sit still even when I'm sick.

Except by EVERY standard, the UK is miles and miles past the US in their pursuit of socialism. That said, it will be interesting to compare the stoic approach to the hibernation approach over the long term and compare.
Different approaches are a good thing. Maybe this way we can start getting some actual data on how this virus acts instead of just worst case scenario estimates.

How can you do herd immunity when you aren't immune after infection? There have been several cases of reinfection already

Oh, that’s nice. I’m sure the parents of the two infants that died share your sentiments.
I’ve always known there are some special pieces of shite in the world. Times like this really show people’s true colors. I really hope a lot of this shite is just said as message board fodder.

But are you immune from it after getting it? I haven't heard that.
They may be basing it on the flu. Which you can't get the same strain twice in a season. This "herd immunity" is definitely going to get a lotmof people killed. Let's just hope they come up with a COVID-19 shot by next season or else we are going to be doing this all over again.

I think that is fine. I'm planning on going on a hike or bike ride today as well cause the weather is nice. Just practice social distancing when outdoors.
It's one thing to be outside at a massive festival with thousands of people vs fishing by yourself

100-500 children will die of RSV every year in America. Did you not give a shite about them you piece of shite as you were gathering at your sporting events and festivals?
Argue hospitalization and bed capacity if you want, but trying to use individual deaths as your argument is absolutely bat shite retarded

The US wants herd immunity too, just via vaccine.

Ok. People die in car accidents every day yet people still drive like idiots. People die of diabetes, yet half this board is obese. People die of heart failure, yet people don’t take their meds and let things like HTN and Hypercholesterolemia spiral out of control.
It sucks but people die. Thats life. Quit letting the media brain wash you.

The point of slowing it down is the strain on the healthcare system.
That’s it.
If we had unlimited hospital beds, this would be a great idea, but we don’t.

That also means all of the people that will get critically ill from this (elderly, those with other health issues) will also all get it all at once and overwhelm our healthcare system.
Then what happens if you need ICU care for something else not even related to coronavirus (say you got into a bad car accident) but all the ICUs are full of coronavirus patients?
Which is why the Brits either have a really awesome healthcare system that can support the entire country getting sick at once or they are banking on killing off their elderly and sick so that they can keep their socialized healthcare solvent.

The plague and Spanish flu didn't work out to well for them.

their plan is for those with issues that may turn critical to self-isolate/quarantine and let everyone else create herd immunity
so that 2-15% of the population gets taken out of society instead of 100% like we're effectively doing
Posted on 3/15/20 at 9:50 am to Sidicous
The Brits can opt this way because their health care system isn't a shite show and can deal with the numbers. Ours can't.

This goes along with the suspicion of possible repetitive infection by the virus instead of one-and-done herd immunity.

From what I understand, this virus mutates rapidly. That means that it can rapidly mutate into a different form that your body doesn't quite recognize. Your immune system will be keyed into the previous form and have an immunity to the original form but not the new mutated form. Thus, you get sick twice.
I believe that is why the flu has stuck around all throughout humanity and why the flu vaccine isn't that effective and gets outdated really quickly.
Viruses and bacteria mutate rapidly because they reproduce rapidly.

We don’t have people saying shite like, “oh well, people are going to die anyway.” We treat, fight and research RSV. Have been for years. I only used the two younger deaths to show it’s not strictly a 80+ year old with major health problems issue.

but it is that population cohort primarily. there are always outliers. using them as a point devalues whatever alleged point you were making

Everything I’ve read said the exact opposite.

I can tell you that the majority of people we’ve seen the past few days have been in the outlier. Mostly 25-50, no history of major health issues, etc. While they will probably be just fine they really can’t be allowed to just walk around and infect everyone they come in to contact with. It’s not that YOU might get infected. A lot of us likely already are. It’s who you may pass it on to. If we can slow that down and save some lives we need to do that at all costs right now with how very little we know about this mutation.
