Drivers for Uber and Lyft packed a New York City hearing on Wednesday to welcome a proposal to set a minimum pay rate of $15 per hour for tens of thousands of struggling men and women who work for e-hailing companies.

quote:

The bottom line is it’s a start, but it’s simply not enough,” said Bhairavi Desai, executive director of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance.

quote:

In a presentation to the commission on Wednesday, the study’s authors said that Uber and Lyft flood New York with cars to reduce passenger wait times. The result is that many drivers spend a large portions of their day cruising empty.

quote:

The proposed earnings rule will force companies to pay workers more if they keep drivers cruising in empty cars. The study’s authors say that should incentivize app-based companies to put fewer vehicles on the road in an attempt to increase the amount of time drivers spend ferrying passengers.

quote:

Michael Reich, a co-author of the study and an economics professor at the University of California at Berkeley, said that the cost increase could be absorbed through better driver productivity, app-based companies charging lower commissions, and a “modest fare increase” of between 3% and 5%.
The study found that 85% of app-based drivers make less than $15 an hour. Under the proposed system, drivers would earn a gross income of $25.76 an hour, which would equate to $15 after deductions, including taxes and vehicle running costs.
Ms. Desai said the commission underestimated drivers’ expenses, putting the proposed hourly pay rate at a sum closer to $11.
Both Lyft and Uber said that the proposal would hurt riders in the outer boroughs because drivers would congregate in business corridors where they could earn more money.

These people are so stupid and short sighted it makes my head hurt.

Uber and Lyft undercut a bloated, terribly run taxi service. It's like they don't understand the same thing will happen to them.

what an absolute shame. How can this organization (whichever one it is) mandate what a private company pays their employees? And if they're getting a guarnateed hourly wage what's the incentive to make them even do any work at all?

I know of some Uber drivers in Atlanta that do it full time that make damn near $70K a year because they bust their arse and work hard. The only people calling for this shite are the bums that do it like 4 hours a week in their spare time then complain they don't make any money off it.

This. $15/hr would be about a 50% paycut for me on my Uber/Lyft hours.

I thought UBER drivers worked off of a % of fares.

They do, but they want a minimum wage

Or, the driver can maybe decide not to drive for uber/lyft because they aren't getting paid enough due to not enough demand. You know, letting the market dictate what their service is worth.

Uber should counter with “we will give you a minimum wage of $15 an hour, but you get none of the surge fees as a result”

These drivers aren’t employees. They are 1099 contractors. I could pay them nothing and just give them tips if I so wanted too as long as the contract they signed stated as much. I hate these guys because they have no business sense. They are running independent businesses and are not employees. Maybe I’m missing something? Did New York change the definition of contractors?

they get a percentage of the fare, and they also typically receive a tip as well. Which is great because it encourages people to work hard and bust their butt to give rides and make money. Giving them a set wage is the opposite of that, it gives no incentive to actually do anything.

You're not missing anything The kind of idiots that protest for a $15 minimum wage are clueless in general, so being clueless about the classification of their employment shouldn't be surprising.

You hate the people that have destroyed the disgusting taxi system and get you home safely after drinking? Uber/Lyft is also a life saver for many people who were recently laid off and can still feed their families while not rushing into an exceptionally shitty job to do it. Uber and Lyft are great net goods for society that’s really made life better in general.

You can be an Uber/Lyft driver and still be an idiot. I get the feeling he only hates the idiots.

You missed my point. They are contractors not employees. There are specific laws and 1099 is paid based upon the contract they sign. These idiots forcing a private company to pay more because they don’t like the contract they signed, using the government to do it, is what I hate.

The people that are successful driving for Uber/Lyft run their vehicles like a business.

I used Uber last night to get home and on the ride home, was wondering what it would take (price increase, crappy cars etc) to not use Uber again.

If the cost of your ride doubled, would you still use it?

Agreed. If they are struggling so much, why in the hell don't they go into another profession?

These people are stupid and don't understand how markets work or that they signed on as independent contractors....not employees.

If Uber/Lyft wanted to make drivers well off, they would have put a cap on the number of drivers hey would put out into a market relative to the level of demand. They don't want to do this. The rideshare is a great idea for the consumer and the rideshare companies, it's not so great for the drivers.....but they knew what they were signing up for.

In reality, these drivers make about 13.00 an hour at night and the charging is really based on distance based on as the crow flies. So in New Orleans for instance if you wanted to go from the university area to Frenchman street an Uber Lyft driver would make 8-10 dollars for that ride despite the fact that it might take in total about 30 minutes from the time they get the prompt and request, pick up and then drop off. It does not work well for the driver in smaller compact cities like NOLA and Manhattan.

In LA and Atlanta as well as Chicago a Lyft/Uber driver can do pretty well

Nevermind the people who relied on and followed the law and purchased taxi medallions.

Sucks that they were duped into an unsustainable system. What laws are NYC Uber/Lyft drivers breaking btw?
