Long story short, we had a box truck go down for one of our locations. We were in a bind, so I called and rented a u-haul (penske & ryder didn't have one available) for our location manager to pick up. Location manager tells u-haul that he can't bring it back before Thursday afternoon.

Get a call last night at 6 pm from U-haul asking why their truck isn't returned. I call my manager who tells me what he told them. I call U-haul back and tell them. They say we have to get the truck back today. The dude was a total arse about the situation.

In my mind, we've got the truck, so screw them and return it whenever. But, I haven't laid eyes on the rental agreement. Waiting on the manager to send it to me. Just wondering if anyone on the OT has had this experience.

Any advice appreciated.

Neither have we. If the contract says you bring it back yesterday and you didn’t, then you’re in violation of the contract. Why didn’t you ask the uhaul guy to send you the contract?

I would imagine you can say screw them and keep it until you're finished with your job... but they will smoke you with penalty fees when you drop it off

I mean, what does the rental agreement say? It should be for so many days, return by this day.

Clearly UHaul believes the contract is up. Whether they are right or not, who knows, until you see the contract.

I don't see how this is really something an adult would need advice about. Kind of amazing

They might’ve had it reserved for someone else on that date.

once you receive the rental agreement, then it will tell you how to proceed with the situation. If the agreement says you have it rented until thursday then they can piss up a rope. If it says it should have already been returned, then that is something you will have to work out with them. If you don't return the truck, then technically they can say it is stolen and you got another set of issues to deal with.

I had this happen with a rental car once. It was rented through the company I was working at corporate travel department. I was supposed to be onsite for two weeks, then it got extended another two weeks, but no one from corporate extended the rental car. I get a phone call saying they were going to report the car stolen so corporate had the get that shite rectified quick. Luckily I do not work for that company anymore and I handle my setting up of all travel and it eliminates most of those issues.

Why wouldn't you have a copy of the rental agreement once it was signed? I thought that was standard.

Clearly you haven’t dealt with U-Haul before.

A reservation for a certain date means that you are guaranteed a truck by close of business that day and they will intentionally frick anyone doing a cross-country rental in favor of someone doing a local rent and return.

Don't forget that this is the same generation that wants to preach to us about how we screwed things up and we don't know what we're doing socially.
