In the Houston area, I was surprised that the comments were about 50/50 in support and against her. Those supporting her claimed that her accomplishments are much more impressive than the 'affluenza' kids that get by due to their privilege.

It made me wonder how many kids in Houston public schools are undocumented. I would guess it's a huge number.

why were they able to hire her?

You'd be amazed how real the ID's & documents you can buy in El Paso (other places also) are. Unless when they call to do an E-Verify on you they find out your social security number is now a dead persons, or your name doesn't match their name you're safe.

There would be a revolution in Mexico if an American kid went there undocumented and took a scholarship away from a Mexican.

Maybe I'm just an idiot but I don't even understand how situations like this get this far.

How has this girl gotten a drivers license, enrolled in college, and a host of other things without being a legal citizen?

I would agree with those people, but that's a completely separate issue. I don't think many people would say she wasn't deserving of her grades and awards because she's illegal.

The problem is that - even though great people with great values, great work ethics, and great skills come to the U.S. - the system needs to be enforced and controlled so that we can ensure that A) criminals and other miscreants aren't sneaking in and B) the system is fair and equitable for all immigrants regardless of whether they are coming from Mexico, South Korea, or England.

I'm pretty sure people don't think that all illegal immigrants are stupid.

I hear and see inflammatory jokes about Mexicans all the time. I can understand why someone with Mexican heritage would be quick to point out their success. It's kind of a natural response when you are constantly bombarded with dickbag comments that suggest you come from inferior stock, especially when those comments come from people who aren't doing shite with their lives.

That said, I think it's silly to put up a Mexican flag when you are excited to be attending a university in the US. What an awful country the US must be if you are provided with those opportunities!

In my opinion, that's a first or second generation thing. Their kids or grandkids will be repping the red, white, and blue.

It is. I graduated high school from a very blue collar school along the Houston ship channel (La Porte) and there were several undocumented illegals that everyone knew about that I went to school with. All of them even drove cars without a license or insurance.

is she in the process of becoming a citizen?

becoming a legal citizen is a long and difficult process, it could take 10-15 years to become a legal citizen

what is she referring to when she means "undocumented"? because I have a hard time believing that she is completely "undocumented" and still able to do all the things that she does

While those individuals bear much of the responsibilities, our system for detecting and removing such individuals has long been broken. Obama has accelerated those inefficiencies, but it didn't start with him.

I'm paying lots of money in taxes and health insurance while people like her will pay little to no taxes and receive free health insurance on my dime. If she was truly as smart as she thinks she is she'd keep her mouth shut about being undocumented and just enjoy free-riding

What's the point of a gpa over 4.0?

And, she's an idiot for putting that on Twitter.

I'm pretty OK with it. She earned the grades fair and square while holding a part time job with a legit company who withheld taxes from her pay checks. It's not necessarily her fault for being undocumented. She's just a kid.

Undocumented or not she earned it. The tweet was stupid and gone are the days when people can put their foot in their mouth without ruining their lives. She learned that lesson the hard way.

Maybe she didn't have a choice? She's a kid. I doubt she had a big say in her parent's decision.

so after reading up on this, she is certainly "documented" because she has a SSN, enrolled in the DACA, and according to her, her family pays taxes

the "undocumented" thing was just a troll

she isn't a legal citizen yet, but she is certainly documented
