Two planes with same callsign avoid collision thanks to ATC

If tweet fails to load, click here. Incredibly quick thinking from air traffic control there. You could hear him lock in once he realizes what's going on and start assigning them arrival and departure suffixes.

Being able to have the same call sign seems like a major incident waiting to happen. I know Railroad locomotives are unique - there are no repeats.

Usually the incoming flight is the same plane on the outgoing departure flight when it's city to / city return. The incoming might have been severely delayed and AA had another plane they could put into service.

Apparently AA runs the same callsign on this route in both directions since it's hub to hub. Makes zero sense since these aren't always going to be turns made by the same plane.

It happened to me before. Two blue streaks (JIA) both CLT arrivals. An automation failure is what tipped me off to it. Could have been bad

Makes sense but you would think there would be some kind of protocol to change the number
