1. Do you understand the difference between an on-the-job accident and risking being murdered for doing your job?
2. The statistical likelihood of officers being murdered is artificially lowered by the number of commissioned police who are working positions that don't expose them to any significant danger. The possibility of beat cops being violently attacked or murdered is actually pretty fricking high when you compare the estimated number of beat cops to the number of officers attacked per UCR stats

Taxi drivers have a higher rate of being killed on the job due to violence than police officers.
Being a police officer in the 60's and 70's was much more dangerous (fewer police, but many more deaths on the job).
In 1974, for example, 280 officers were killed in the line of duty, 140 to gunfire.
In 2015, 130 officers died in the line of duty, 39 by gunfire. So, with many more officers, the number of police officer murders has dropped significantly.
Being a police officer in the 60's and 70's was much more dangerous (fewer police, but many more deaths on the job).

Training was worse, ballistic vests were nonexistent, the use of SWAT teams for high risk arrest warrants was nonexistent, and the likelihood of hospitals being able to save a person suffering from a gunshot wound was FAR worse.
And again, statistically it's only about half (at best, probably actually as low as a third or a fourth) of the head count in BLS or DOJ estimates for total number of police that are actually doing street-level police work. There are hundreds of thousands of commissioned officers who have cycled out of street-level policing and are basically just office workers. That's not a dig against them but it's something that isn't actually adequately acknowledged in the BLS stats.

My wife and I are both ER docs at the trauma center to which the cops were taken. We were not working today. We got a picture an hour or two ago showing a mass gathering at the ambulance bay of mourners as the two deceased's bodies were removed. It is heartbreaking. Palm Springs is a small town. We don't live there but I bet there were a lot in the community that knew them well.

That is true but in those professions the deaths are usually accidents and no one maliciously caused them.
Meanwhile cops are outright targeted to be killed nowadays just for being cops. I can't think of any other profession where people are purposely hated and killed like cops are.

Meh that police protect and serve crap has been tainted 1000000x over. Its still a tragedy that they were murdered and the specific individuals (new mother and 35 year vet about to retire) make it extremely sad.
But special honors should be reserved for people who truly protect and serve like EMS and firefighters NOT police

I would hate to be a cop responding to a dv call. Every divorce lawyer I know keeps a gun in their desk because those domestic situations can be extremely volatile.

The man officer was a father of 8 and the woman was only 27 years old.
Sad regardless, but geez. Why does this guy get to live. Not sure he should have ever been released and he better never once again be allowed back out on the streets.
