BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The fight over whether to relocate BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo is once again ramping up, this time at the state capital, as two lawmakers prepare to present bills to prevent the proposal.

Rep. Barbara Carpenter, D-Baton Rouge, has already pre-filed a bill that would make it illegal for BREC to relocate the attraction from its current location in north Baton Rouge. She says it's a move to help those in her district. “People feel that they really have not been heard,” said Carpenter.

Carpenter says she has done a lot of listening over the past several months and has had enough. The last straw for her was when BREC started taking another look at the State Fairgrounds on Airline Highway. The site was originally taken off the table due to severe flooding there in 2016.

“BREC is trying to spend all this money to shore up that area to make it 'safe,' and that’s just not going to work,” said Carpenter.LINK

A lot of places experienced severe flooding in 2016. If we regularly get 31" of rain in two days, I'd be against moving it to that location as well.

Good thing we get 31" of rain once every 30-50 years.

Maybe if they actually went to the zoo they might listen.

Moving the zoo is a complete waste of money, but this bullshite is ridiculous. It's not the state's place to ensure the location of a goddamn zoo.

This pretty much sounds illegal to me

In my best greatlakes impression

Every single time I look through proposed bills I am FLOORED at how reactionary, biased, and short-sighted it all is. We need PROACTIVE, EVIDENCE BASED, SUSTAINABLE legislative practices y’all. This is a mess. And if each year we keep adding shite like this we will remain tangled in the web that is preventing us from moving forward. Period.

(Not even mentioning the bills that are flat out OPPRESSIVE AND AWFUL! Those people have some kind of nerve to propose some of those things)

I could care less where the zoo is but these two idiots have caused me to fully support the move. The State has no business in parish business.....

Sad that people elect Representatives that throw temper tantrums when they don't get their way. Can't influence BREC with any real evidence of why the Zoo should stay? Let's just make a law saying they can't move the zoo. If it wasn't so sad, it would be funny.

The zoo is the bait that gets the prey into NBR. If you remove the bait, you destroy the delicate balance in that ecosystem and predators starve.

The zoo teaches us about the food chain.

I'd be interested to see which part of the state constitution she used to justify her position that the state government has the authority to enact this legislation.

What kind of shenanigans is this?

I've never been to your zoo, but how the hell can someone think it's a good idea to make it illegal to move it if it's in a shitty location?

Someone said in the thread yesterday that BREC was created by the state legislature.
