I would propose your consideration of planting peanuts, pecans and Silver Queen Corn in the greater Baldwin, AL area.

I have a suggested trip for you the next time you go through Mobile to Lower Alabama.

Take the H-98 exit off I-10, southbound toward the coast.

Within a half mile, you will pass a lovely church on the left side of the highway - The Malbis Memorial (Greek Orthodox) Church. The history/story of this house of worship evades me now, but they are almost always open for tours. There are nice folks who will walk you through and tell you about the church. Anyhow, it is time well spent.

Immediately south of Malbis, you will begin passing through pecan orchard after orchard. They all seem prolific and if the time of the year is right, there are several pecan stands you can visit.

On farther south, at H-181 and H-64, there is a really nice fruit and vegetable stand (Allegri Farm Market) that stocks my favorite brand of Mennonite Egg Noodles. If it is corn season, they will have Silver Queen Corn, a very good long shoe peg kernel White corn. very good roasted with a little butter, which Allegri also sells.

If you do pottery, there is a nice pottery store (Rezner pottery) a little more to the south on the east side of the road.

For some reason H-181 turns to H-27 at Coinstar road, where there is a nice Walmart (making the drive even more worthwhile). When we go to the condo, we usually atop there and buy a large bag of M&Ms (an old guilty pleasure of mine that I have given up for a year or two.

If you do antique browsing (and who doesn't?) Stop at the Dragonfly emporium, a little on down H-27. They have a really nice stock of old doors, old door knobs and old bathtubs - just like at Granny's house outside of Isola, MS.

Somewhere not far south of Draonfly, the road takes a sudden east turn, followed by a nearly immediate right hand turn, so be careful to not allow your automobile speed to get very high, so you can safely negotiate the diverted roadway. Just after the second turn in a home with a huge downed tree trunk in the yard. On one trip down, there were three kids seated on the trunk watching the world pass by. They seemed friendly and waved at us as we drove by. The wife (MHNBPF) waved back at them. I had a secure 10:00 and 2:00 grip on the wheel and did not wave. If you see them, be sure to wave as you pass by.

A quarter mile south of the waving kids is a talented clock repairman (Hands of Time Clock Repair and Emporium on Poser Drive, just North of H-98) you would enjoy meeting him the next time you are there. He did some excellent work a few years back on my tall case clock and I enjoyed talkin Horology with him.

Soon after, you will come to a T intersection, where H-27 hits H-98. Turn east. Not long after that, you will pass Week's Bay. where Jimmy Buffet's sister (LuLu) once hed her "burger joint, attached to a bait stand" - a reference to Jimmy's belief the best burgers he ever had (Cheeseburger in Paradise) came from eateries like the one his sister owned.

A side story - One night we stopped at LuLu's on Weeks Bayou for a burger during a trip to the condo. As we seated ourselves at one of the 6 tables, Jimmy Buffet himself stepped up to take our order. He was helping his sister out and sat with us while we had dinner. He was a nice guy and we had a nice visit. I will say, not once in the many visits we had at the burger joint attached to a bait shop, did LuLu ever come out from the kitchen to chat.

Just east of Weeks Bay, Next left I believe is Fish River Road, and a half mile up on the left is the prettiest Pitcher Plant Bog you will ever encounter. There is an elevated wooden walkway that goes all the way to Week's Bay. Nice to make the walk and look at the thousands of Carnivorous plants without getting your feet wet. Take your camera with you to make photos. We have about a thousand of them, taken during the many times we have stopped there.

If you are hungry, Stop in Magnolia Springs at Jesse's For truly fine white tablecloth dining. There is also a market attached where we usually buy steaks for cooking at the beach.

At the intersection of H-98 and H-65, take a right and soon you will find yourself in Bon Secour. Follow the signs to Billy's Seafood and get plenty of Shrimp and (I know you like it) Fresh lump crab meat. You might as well buy oysters too, since a trip to the beach is not worth taking unless you can feast on some oysters.

If you do this. I expect and will enjoy reading your report on the trip and thoughts on this alternate way of going from Mobile to the Redneck Rivera.

My wife went to HS in Parrish. Population 930. She graduated with like 32 kids. It's maybe 7-8 miles from Jasper. A lot of that was coal mining county.
