The fee is not welcomed by everyone. Commenting on the Hullabaloo article, one parent said: “I already spend A LOT of money sending my child to Tulane. Charging me an additional fee that will benefit only non-white students is treading on dangerous ground. My child and I will be reevaluating the decision to attend Tulane.

Imagine being a student at an expensive private university and truly believing you’re oppressed in some way.

You haven't heard whining until you have heard kids from Episcopal who are now east coast lawyers whining in public about how oppressive their childhood was and how everyone is an evil racist.

Yeah, having two doctors as parents, living in an upscale neighborhood, and getting the Corvette to drive to school because your brother left it behind when he got into Harvard was tough.

Tulane is the ultimate backup college for kids in the Northeast to attend when they are denied Ivy League/prestigious liberal arts schools entry. They would rather act like they actually wanted to go to Tulane, than just getting a degree from Rutgers, UConn, etc. It’s a way of saving face.

How is this not racist?

Edt: Serious, please educate me. I don't understand.

This is racist and black people need to wake the frick up. You aren't good enough for Tulane, so we are going to create programs for you.

How about just accept more black people. Or are they saying, well black people can't afford our school, so we will tax every one else.

They are marginalizing the marginalized.

I've always wondered what would happen if I just checked the block as a minority. Is there even a legal way to enforce that?

The cost of tuition and fees at Tulane for the 2020-21 school year is about $59,000, according to the university’s website.

Holy shite, $240,000 for a college education from Tulane is insane. I went to the University of Arkansas for about half of that 10-14 years ago.

Is this normal right now, or is Tulane's tuition super high?

But what "legally" is a minority?

This becomes a tricky situation because most rules defining a minority (one drop, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/32, etc.) are controversial as hell and have gone out of use outside of Indian tribes where you have to be a certain recognized percentage to be a tribe member.

Theres an old book from the '60s which I read in the '80s, called College Confidential. It gave opinions on various schools. I've never forgotten a comment on Tulane, Duke, Vanderbilt, Rice, etc.: "They have saved many Northereasterners from the supposed horrors of attending their state universities".

And I recall another article: "LSU offers a class called Books and Libraries, without which many of its students might remain unaquainted with the two phenomena".

Tulane is basically catering to people from the East Coast who couldn't get into more prestigious schools up there, so they are charging tuition comparable to a lot of those schools.

It's basically Rolex prices for lesser value.

This is ridiculous. They're attending Tulane, a school 95% of college aged kids can't attend for a number of reasons.

Somebody just wants money for a pet project

This is the student government. It's a bunch of hyper progressive college kids trying to make a name for themselves.

Nothing of note will happen.

Nobody actually pays sticker at Tulane. The school has a ton of scholarships and the Financial Aid office tends to be very generous for poor kids.

The 59k is a fake number. If you're not getting coin to help you attend, then do NOT go.

So the adults will put a stop to this?

but there should be a law against claiming to be a protected class which you obviously aren’t.

We have those laws regarding false claims of disability and veteran status

I really just wonder what academic life at Tulane is, or was. Never went to school there, often wondered about it over the years.

Adults won't stop the student govt. They'll just quietly shelve the bill or neuter it down to nothing.
