2001 I believe. We had a pay phone in the gym people would call their parents to come get them after practice. Someone prank called 911 on it and they removed it soon after

Right before I got my first cell phone ( Nokia brick for the win)

I’m pretty sure it’s because of that Jodie foster movie.

Or was it Helen Hunt? Everyone gets them confused.

Always thought it was death nail as a kid growing up. Like the last one they pound into your coffin.

Nope. That would be "the final nail in the coffin".

Death knell refers to the long slow ringing, or "knell", of a bell. It is used to signify a death in the local community.

Google says there are still 100k pay phones active in the US. Not sure how much I believe that. I haven't seen one in years.

Me, probably late 80's early 90's. Got my first cell phone in '94. Bell South Mobility, still have the same #. Hard to believe that was 30 years ago.

Started with this....

It’s actually “Death Nell”

The term originated from the 1994 movie starring Jodie Foster

I thought it was a death kneel, like what caitlin Clark took this week according to her msb fans

Knell - a slow, ominous ringing, often from a bell

Origins - from Middle German erknellan and Old English cnyllan

In today's Hollywood Superman would be a trannie and would change in the women's restroom.

There is one active in Oxford on the square by the parking garage. It’s in the old time Oxford telephone booth so it’s basically there for show. But it does work.
