The problem with you and most Americans is that you think other cultures are just like you, except maybe poorer with different food.
That is simply NOT the case, and we have had to learn that lesson over and over. Their definition of "rational" and "logical" are very different from yours. The generation that fought WWII knew, after facing the Japanese and Germans. The present generations, from boomers on, do not understand this.
I did business all over the world. I had to learn, quickly, how to deal with different cultures according to their OWN cultural mores and biases. The Iranian leadership, and for that matter, the leadership of most of the ME, is NOT LIKE US. You have to drill down into their past to build perspective and understand. They ONLY respect strength.
Iranian clerical leadership and their true believers would consider fallout to be Inshallah, and a small price at that for the destruction of Israel. They would consider any price to be worth it to take out a major US metro. They are not like us. We have to deal with them on THEIR terms, and that means force.
