The only power lines it is on it the line to the house. They would just come and disconnect it from the pole
Posted on 10/13/18 at 11:41 am to theantiquetiger
If those are power lines, I would imagine the city would take care of it.

Good point. I’d take the offer. I doubt you’ll get better. Just don’t pay till it’s done.

Don’t count on it. Read your policy carefully.
Almost all HO3 policies say they owe a reasonable amount to remove the tree from the covered property and most ponies allow up to $500 for tree debris removal...

Don't listen to these people. 2700 is highway robbery after you were arse raped. Tree is already on the house so its not like you have to be careful when dropping it. If ya"ll are not comfortable with the chainsaw get a neighbor to just cut it where it broke to finish getting it to the ground then ya"ll take it from there.

Insurance will cover it. $2700 doesn’t sound outrageous either.
Yes, you can buy a chain saw and do it yourself. Once it’s done and off the house, you will wish you paid the money just to have it hauled away. In situations like this, time is very valueable. Pay to have it done and use that time to do one of the many other tasks.

quote:exactly, I found from buying land and building that this is this biggest cost- hauling. no logging company really bothers buying the wood unless it is over 20- 30 acres.
maybe so. Tree companies are charging the prices that they would charge regularly with hauling away, cleaning etc etc. But during emergencies, such as hurricanes, they can leave the wood by the road for someone else to pick up, and are making bank off of it.

I'd never pay someone $2700 to get rid of that.

A 4wd, a strap, two binder straps, and a chain saw.
Binder strap on each side of where you will be cutting the stump.
4x4 hooked high enough to roll it slightly as you cut.
Cut/roll, drop, remove top limbs and then roll it over and remove others.
Section and toss. Probably 8 hours of work for a two man crew.
You or the old lady cook something, buy a few cases of beer, and call up a few baws.

OP, if you do it, you better know what you doing. A tree like that can and will get away. It needs to be pieced down from the top back to the stump. Don't even try cutting it at the break. $2700 is high, but were this is taken place, no bad if they say they will put everything out to the road.

We not doing it. I never planned to do it. This SOB is a widow maker. The little Pulan saw he bought would do the job. We could only take off the branches.

Why not go to Home Depot, rent a saw, and do it yourself?
Posted on 10/13/18 at 1:58 pm to theantiquetiger
I'd just pay the 2700 and move on to the next chore.... dont paralyze yourself with decisions at this point.

Up here we have winter so you can pretty reliably find someone to cut the tree for free if they can keep the wood. IDK if there are any hobbyist or what not down there that would need wood.
Are you fricking kidding me? They just went through a cat 4 and you think some hobbyist is hanging around with a chain saw?
$2700 isn’t bad but I’m sure a few more people will come by so shop it unless he needs the tree off immediately.

First, have the utility company disconnect the power line at the Pole.
Second, rent a medium sized excavator. Bring the dipper and boom in and tilt the bucket back and cradle the underside of the trunk with it, as close to the house as you can get. Try to lift up on the tree by swinging the dipper up. If you're able to lift the top end of the tree off the house, then push the tree away from the house by extending the boom and dipper.
If excavator doesn't have the strength to lift the tree at that pickup point then go to the other side of the tree, opposite of the house and do the same thing closer to the top end of the tree except hook a long chain up to it so you and the excavator are out of the danger zone. Instead of pushing your now pulling it towards you.
Third, tree should now be on the ground. Hopefully you were able to drop the tree and break all the branches between it and the ground so that the trunk isn't being propped up off the ground by its branches.
Fourth, enjoy your 2 year supply of free firewood for your chimenea.

Insurance will reimburse for it, pay it and get it removed.
Better check your policy. Most homeowners policies have limitations on the maximum they’ll pay for tree removal

For sure and good call. Just make sure they have insurance at that price.

Wish I lived near there. I'd do for $750. Cut it at the base. Then cut limbs little at a time, let it drop naturally but slowly.
