So they’ll sell drugs so babies can get swole but it’s still illegal for a doctor to give medicine to help a man build muscle?

this is 100% because they know the insurance companies will either cover it or the government will subsidize it. It's a cruel circle

Wrong

This is 100% due to the fact that this medicine coat a lot to develop AND is a low utilization med.
If a Rx costs $2B to develop, but will only have a few thousand users per year...this is what happens.

The federal government will get at least a 37% discount on it (for VA, PHS, DOD, etc). Why? Because even though it's a gene therapy, it will have an NDC and be a SIN 42-2A covered drug. Novartis is required to put it on its FSS contract.

Earlier, they were considering “We’ve shown through other studies we are cost effective in the range of $4-$5 million.”

It amazing the lengths people will go to justify greed

When the socialists get done removing “greed” from the health care industry then we can all rest easy - since there won’t be a health care industry.

How much should it cost?

I used to make a drug called Ponatinib which is stupid expensive. I think 1 kg of API was $500k. I was holding a sample of tablets to get a visual check and a coworker says "you're holding a new car". Whenever a tablet would drop on the floor and we'd have to reject it we basically were throwing away a big arse tv. Fun times.

The replacement cost of that tablet is probably in the neighborhood of a dollar, at most. It's the R&D that they're recouping at $500k/kg.

Greed is the only reason a life saving cure for a previously untreatable condition even exists.

It is what it is.

Exactly.

It is a double edged sword.

Why aren’t the non-greedy people making these medications?

Maybe this has already been pointed out; the published price points for these drugs that treat incredibly rare or deadly genetic disorders are not accurate at all for 99% of the recipients.

I don’t take issue with the value they imply with the price they claim, but I understand the public outrage. It’s too complicated.

Where is the outrage about the shameless inflated pricing game of insulin? Novo Nordisk makes the OTC Relion “generic” that only Walmart is allowed to sell for $25. It costs their competitor pharmacies $150 - $175 just to order it.

How do you think the iPhone came about? Which basically started a smart phone revolution. How do you think silicon Valley works?

Just wanting money isnt greed though. You create something incredible then the market should determine that you get paid appropriately.

Would you rather this drug to not exist?

Drugs like that will most likely not be on any insurance formulary. Only the richest will be able to afford it. Almost a wast of time developing that drug.

This train of thought leads to no new products and more people dying than just the very VERY select population.

That is bullshite. Obviously the point of medicine isn't to heal anyone, but to make record profits off the sick.

It’s okay for there to be some things available only to the wealthiest who can afford it. If whoever is selling it could reduce the price and still make profit, they would to increase the volume of their sales. There’s a reason 200 ft yachts are only affordable to the wealthy.

Nobody needs a 200 foot yacht to survive past the age of two. The vast majority of people who have a child come down with this disease will have absolutely no way of paying for the cure.

I want to know what the hell happened to all the treatments/cures we were promised from stem cell research? I only remember hearing of a few treatments being developed from it.

For two million dollars it may as well not exist.
