About to see some benefits for these families to pay for this. No way the average family can even begin to muster that cost on their own.

This is the kind of stuff that crowd funding would be useful for. It is much better than paying for Braxton’s travel ball team.

1) what were the R&D cost
2) what is the actual cost to produce a treatment regiment
3) what is the potential number of yearly patients that will use the drug
4) number of patients expected before ability to use generics.

Company should get a profit vs all the costs incurred. If not there will be no new drugs of this type.

Medicaid and insurers will end up paying for it. These kids end up needing care that will greatly exceed that price tag by the time they hit 18.

The market will take care of that then. If it's too expensive and price can be brought down, Novartis will work for a way to reduce the price.

If the price can't be brought down and no one pays, it'll be off the market.

Capitalism ftw
in theory. But we know that's not reality when it comes to Healthcare.

As for the OP, I don't have a problem with the pricing. "it is what it is"

I am sure people realize that this treatment is not a pill but actual gene therapy.

Here's a link on that means:

Here's also a link on Zolgensma.

LINK /

BTW, Novartis bought AveXis, which I believe was the primary R&D arm for Zolgensma prior to purchase for 8.7bn.

The market will dictate the costs and for now this is the cost of business to take on rare diseases in our society.

You could always go to another country or market where there is no research done but you can get advil for free.

It’s crazy that doctors are able to come up with cures for rare diseases if they can charge 2 million for it but they won’t cure common diseases that people suffer from. Like hangovers

There's a difference between raping customers on their new iphone, or their internet service, or cell phone plan simply b/c you can, and charging an ungodly amount for something that will literally save peoples lives. There was a time when people would discover things like this, win a Nobel, make a lot of money while remembering the most important thing is saving lives.
I'm all for people making whatever they can, but when it comes to healthcare in this country, they can all go suck a dick.

Just found out my kid needs to be in wheel chair for quite some time b/c of a hip condition he has. Get a prescription for the wheel chair and go to the place and they are talking about the chairs being $3,500-$7,000. I go look online and the same exact chair is $330 on Amazon. I"m not talking about looks alike, THE SAME EXACT CHAIR. So I can pay $500 in copays and own that chair after 10 months, or i can pay $330 to Amazon and own that chair. Why is the wheelchair manufacturer getting to pocket and extra three grand simply b/c i went through my insurance? That right there is the problem with this countries healthcare. We so often never see what the true cost of something is b/c we simply pay what the insurance tells us and they pay the rest, and our insurance rates just keep going up b/c every Tom Dick and Harry is out there taking advantage of how they price their services and products b/c they know the insurance companies will pay it.

When you buy from the amazon doctor you put the brick and mortar doctor out of business

Neither the amazon nor the brick and mortar doctor are doctors.
Find a way to adapt and keep your business running or close the doors blockbuster.

It's funny how many supposedly capitalist supporters in here feel entitled to this formerly non-existent drug.

The lesson here-if you create something amazing for health, a shite load of people want you to give it to them for free. What motivates anyone to innovate then?

This is exactly why we should socialize medicine.
