The gentleman sport!
Tried to attend every submarine race held in Lake Pontchartrain as possible in my youth!
Uboats are just so fascinating! Torpedoes loose!

About 20 years ago, I was driving north of Covington and had some trouble with my car so I pulled off the road at the first opportunity. That just happened to be an entrance to a junkyard for old cars. I got out of the car to look at the problem and was able to see around the gate they had set up and saw a price guide for seating for some sort of fighting event. I suspected it was either a cock fight or dog fight. I minded my own business and left asap.
That’s the closest I ever got.

So, the reason dogs and cats don't have rights is because we domesticated them. OK, we domesticated savages. Why do they have rights and can vote?

I've seen one, but not as an active participant.
When I was a kid, my grandparent's next door neighbor raised fighting roosters. In his barnyard, he had this long metal building where he kept his pigeons (I'm pretty sure he made money on racing pigeons as well), his feed, etc. In the far corner of the building, after what seemed like a labyrinth full of narrow little passages to get to it, he had a ring. I'd gone over to visit many times and seen him fighting his roosters in his ring, but with little boxing gloves strapped to their spurs. They couldn't kill each other, but he could judge which ones were game to fight and know which birds to bring when he went to the cockfights.
Anyway, one day I went over and made my way to the back and there were about ten dudes in there all around the ring with fistfuls of cash and two bloody roosters in the ring with a few cages on the side with more roosters in them. It was the only time I'd ever seen the real thing and my grandparent's neighbor sent me on my way back to their house real quick. No big deal at the time, it just wasn't a place for little kid to be; everyone around knew he fought roosters. I didn't realize until then, though, that he sometimes hosted small private fights at his house. It was only much later that I realized that the building being built like a maze was so if someone tried to back out or welsh on a bet, they'd have a hard time getting away.

that's not really true. there are dead birds on the ground everywhere
Yep. If the birds you are fighting are brothers, if one of them "runs" then the other two will also. They just get their necks rung without even entering the pit. The most blood I ever saw was from a handler that got a metal spur run thru his lower arm between the bones. He just wrapped a towel around it and kept on pitting his bird. Alcohol does wonderfully for his type.

My experience is in Nicaragua. The metal spurs were to make the fight even, like handicapping. They didn't use the razors like in Mexico.
And yeah I saw the little boxing gloves.

I read about a sport in the medieval ages. They would nail down the tail of a cat and tie a guy's hands behind his back. He had to kill the cat with his head. It was quite common for people to lose eyeballs playing this game.

I was there then, mostly for the music, Poboy, Clifton Chenier, etc, would take a look in the back on occasion, once asked the girl at the door to the cock pit how could they do this, it being illegal, she pointed to a guy sitting in stands and said that's the Sheriff.

Been to a Chicken Drop and across the street there was Bear Wrestling...Like a real Bear. The Bear beat all these big guys and a skinny guy came damn close to taking the Bear.

Been to the old Atchafalya Game Club a few times when I was younger.
Had opportunities to go to Cock fights in Peru and Bull fights in Mexico but turned them down as an adult. Just not a fan of killing animals for sport, if you can even call it that.

As a teenager, a group of friends and I wandered into one in rural Iberia Parish back in the mid 60s. A very strange bunch of people to say the least. I still pass the location periodically and always think about that Sunday afternoon.

Had a customer in New Iberia who was head of entire organization . I attended once and that was once to many.

They did.
My Dad raised gamecocks for over 20 years. We have several trophies from those days. He met Ray Price, the country singer, at Sunset, which was pretty well known on the circuit.
