Jays lounge in Cankton, La. in the 70’s.
I have never been there but I met Jay. His grandsons are my cousins and they used to train and fight his birds in Kaplan and Rayne. I used to go many times and win a few dollars on those roosters. You couldnt bet really big because everyone in there knew those birds were good.

A couple of times back in 70's. In the woods between Zwolle and Converse. Interesting scene. Ole boy I rode out with was a derrickman who knew the guy running the fight.

I’d like to see a bare knuckle fist fight though.
Go to tiger land and chill in the parking lot once the bars close

Hmmm...I went to one once there. Plastic spurs, while it was legal.

Went to one out in the woods near Tupelo, MS, back in the day. I didn't like it. I don't get the attraction.

Never been to a cock fight, but I shot our rooster after it spurred my youngest son.

I killed one with a pair of channel locks for spurring my youngest boy. I kicked the shite out of him the day before for tryin to spur me so he had his chance.

There used to be a big ring on Hwy 71 North (from Shreveport) right at the state line.
That was 3 States Game Club near Hosston, LA. There was a time it was legal in Louisiana but not in Texas or Arkansas so that ring got birds from a large area. I went once as a friend of a friend had gamecocks in the ring. It seemed to me that a lot of the “losers” didn’t make it out of the pits alive. Those with spurs could drag out a long time. Those outfitted with knives (called Guamaian fights) were over very quickly. The people in attendance mostly looked as if they stepped out of the movie “Deliverance”.
It was definitely not my cup of tea and seemed pretty debased and brutal.

Was very big in Cajun culture. There were small pits all over La. as well as several of the largest to be found anywhere. The larger events drew people from several states.
There was even a magazine dedicated to it called Grit & Steel.
My Dad was involved in it in a big way during the 50s, 60s & 70s. He had over 100 individual "scratch pens" which were about 10' x15' x10' high were roosters were kept. The roosters being conditioned for a tournament were housed in a 10,000 sqft building divided into different type of conditioning areas.
There was big money involved for the serious guys that knew how to breed and train. Some even did so as a profession for some of the wealthy people involved.

There was another called The Gamecock.
Johnny Manziel's grandfather was a prominent breeder.
Once upon a time, cockfighting was known as 'the sport of kings'. American presidents such as Washington and Lincoln were enthusiasts.

when it was still legal, you’d stay away from the chicken and sausage gumbo on Mondays.

Used to go to Jay's specially when Marcia Ball was playing. When she'd take her break the money would start flowing and the cockfights would start for a half hour or so.
Friend told me that the first time he went, an old boy walked up to him and handed him a $20 bill. He tried to turn it down saying that he didn't even know he had bet.
Old boy told him that if the cockfight had gone the other way, he would have paid or gone home in a box.
True story.

For cock / dog / bull fighting, the death of the beast is the primary "sport" and seems to be beneath the dignity of humanity today.
This isn't accurate. Dog fights end with a dead dog probably 1% of the time, at most. Way too much time and money invested in them. Basically the same with chickens.

You’re lucky to be alive going out in them woods

Yeah, if a rooster loses, but fights like hell, you'd try to save him to breed.
