People like this have always existed but their influence was limited because they were few in numbers and normal people just wrote them off as crazy (as they should) and society just rolled along without paying them much attention. Then the internet came out and people like this were given a platform they never had before, and social outcasts that just wanted to be a part of something banded together and started demanding the world cater to them.
Why society started bending to them, I have no idea. I guess people were afraid to be labeled bigots and a lot of deranged celebrities with large visible platforms started backing them, and decided it was easier to just give them what they want so they'd shut up, and society kept gradually giving them more credibility inch by inch until here we are.
