Toys ‘R’ Us is opening 120 new stores as grownup collectors fuel toy sales

Some people never seem to grow up. A resurgent Toys “R” Us is hoping to take that fact to the bank.
The storied chain announced Thursday it was opening 120 standalone Toys “R” Us locations this holiday season. In total, 160 standalone stores will be open in time for Christmas, the company said. The chain is already featured at numerous Macy’s outlets across the country.
Expect to see many adults and even teens shopping for themselves at these locations, in addition to the usual holiday shopping for kids.
Toy sales among adult-only households have now outpaced households with children for toy sales, growing 16% through June, according to market research group Circana, equivalent to 55% of total toy industry receipts. Toy sales among all adults are growing 25%, only slightly behind the teen group at 33%. Together, teens and adults generated nearly 60% of the industry’s incremental dollar gains in the first half, Circana said.
The trends have helped toys see their strongest overall first-half-of-the-year sales in six years. It’s part of a broader trend toward so-called “analog” products in an increasingly digital world.
“We’re seeing toys increasingly function as hobbies, fandom ecosystems, and social experiences rather than traditional children’s products,” said Kristen McLean, vice president of client insights for Circana’s Entertainment Knowledge Group. “That’s expanding the consumer base and creating new opportunities for manufacturers and retailers that understand how to engage collectors, enthusiasts, gifters, and self-purchasers.”

It’s those Christmas season pop-ups that have appeared in random strip malls. It’s basically the Christmas version of Spirit Halloween - not the true TRU experience we had as kids.

The precedent was already set with this growth of adult baseball card collectors. Which actually are the only baseball card collectors nowadays, since it's not like 11 year olds collect baseball cards anymore.
Now, adults are buying even worse things. They are now buying stuff like Toys R US that's meant for 4 year olds rather than stuff like baseball cards that's meant for 11 year olds.

Saw what looked to be a 30 year old man at the airport coddling a stuffed animal a couple weeks ago. The younger generation is very weird.

Actually makes sense for nostalgia. And cards aren't that different from other memorabilia. I'm sure a lot of us have end zone grass or game programs.

You can't be coddling your stuffed animals. You have to be strict, but fair. You need a firm hand and established boundaries and expectations in order to teach your stuffed animals personal accountability and respect, for self and others. Being weak now will all but ensure that they grow up to be terrible adults.

I can remember as a kid my dad telling me “you’re getting too old to be doing that” and slightly ridiculed me. It hurt my feelings at the time. But looking back I appreciate that guidance so I didn’t turn out to be a 40 year old man buying toys for myself at toys r us

They closed down their US operations in 2019 but have now reopened 40 stores in the US, and now I guess are going to expand to 160 stores.
Until today, I had thought they had shut down worldwide in 2019, and had no idea that they still existed in foreign countries. Nor did I have any idea that they'd now re-entered the US market.

I can understand baseball cards. There can be nostalgia and actual value in the right cards. Not much different than collecting coins
