Toyota SUV and Truck Owners -question about engine noise

Is it normal for the engine to sort of sound like it never switches gears? It def switches but engine just sounds high rev even tho RPM is low? Also engine brake sounds / like using engine to brake, if that makes sense, when let foot off gas? 2010-2015 era I’m referring to

Do you have one with a CVT transmission? If so, yes.

My Tundra is kind of loud

Hmm not sure - is that a certain year?

What vehicle specifically are you asking about?

My Tundra downshifts to assist braking. I have no idea what the rest of your post is asking.

I thought Nissan was the only one utilizing CVT. I had a Maxima and sold it after 6 months because of that.....not a fan.

I have a '10 Tundra 5.7 with 180K. Not sure what you mean in regards to the shifting/reving. I can say mine shifts really smoothly, almost unnoticeable, and if you're not used of that it may seem odd, IDK.
As for engine braking, as I recall reading in the manual, the tow/haul button/mode extends shift points and does some engine breaking. But it's not all that noticeable.
Thinking about those two symptoms as you described, if they are both really pronounced, you may have a single transmission issue causing both.
Edit: these have a 6-speed, non cvt transmission

Not a CVT. 5 speed automatic. Could be in tow/haul

look on door vin sticker, it will say CVT on itin the transmission category
CVT = constant velocity transmission (high rev drivetrain)
unless they greatly improved them, they are well known to crap out around 80k miles as a result

I know 3rd gen Tacomas had some shifting issues with the transmission, but that was after your era you had mentioned. Roundabout way to say I don't know.

My 2005 4Runner definitely revs loud but gear switching is noticeable. It's the V8 model, so that's to be expected I guess. It also engine brakes, but really only on downhills.
But it also does something possibly related that kind of annoys me. If I'm stopped at a light, if I don't have the brake pedal solidly mashed down, it wants to lurch forward. Guy at the shop I take it to that specializes in Toyota vehicles said it is normal and has something to do with how the engine is torqued. It went over my head when he explained it.

If you’re in Baton Rouge, bring it over to university car care on highland to get it checked out. Mark(the owner) is a Toyota guru.

Definitely not Mark. But he is a very nice guy and for sure knows Toyota’s. I’m a 30 year old white guy and he’s a 50-60 year old Iranian.

that puts out the new 8 speed which i hate. it also turns off everytime you stop and the sound of the ignition turning over when you hit the gas will slowly drive you mad over time.
