DI+turbo is a big red flag for me. But Toyota’s hybrid systems have proven to be extremely reliable.

Sounds like you would prefer the 70 series, which we don’t get here. That’s actually what the LC’s reputation is built on. It’s a great truck but it would be too costly to certify it for crash standards in the US. I wish we could get that one.

I’d prefer a naturally aspirated powertrain as well, but Toyota is still building the LC to be bulletproof & last a long time. What I like is that it’ll still be built at their legendary LC factory, it’ll have over 300HP & be extremely torquey. The hybrid set-up will be the old school one that’s been proven for years. No one builds hybrids & engines better than Toyota. I like the hauling capability & addition of trainer brake control.

I'm OK with the hybrid but really don't want a 4 banger one. They come out with a V6 hybrid and i'm in. Gonna be cruising around the ranch in EV mode stealth stalking pigs.

1) that hybrid battery I’ll ultimately have to be replaced or reconditioned
2) all the tech (like that giant middle screen) that people want nowadays is going to make it hard to keep these things long time. Like will toyota makes these screens 15th years from now?

They can get several hundred thousand intense miles out of the hybrid systems used in taxicabs in NYC and Chicago.

Yeah. But people have driven the prior generation tundra for a million miles. Some guys drove a 90s Lexus sedan a million miles. Comparatively, hybrids will require more work.

Now there are options for reconditioning. Hoovies garage did a good video where he did it to a Prius.

We've seen Volvos, Chevrolet/GMC pickups, and Honda sedans with that kind of mileage before. Happens pretty often with domestic trucks used for logistics/hot shot services. But....none of those are hybrids.

I can see how that would eventually add costs to maintain. How big is the battery in this LC? Presumably it's not the giant ones that are in the Tesla products, so they are probably easier/cheaper to replace. I guess they are under the back seat or below the load floor in the cargo area, so they are probably relatively easy to get to.

I know the Prius batteries are far, far cheaper to replace than the full EV batteries and they do last several hundred thousand miles or more. But it's still not something you want to have to deal with for an aging car that may not be worth very much.

Cannot believe they made a Land Cruiser without a tailgate. Guess I'll just stick with my 100 series for another decade...

Or at least a roll down rear glass. That's odd to me.

I'm just happy it doesn't have the Prado/GX barn door.

All these hopped up tiny turbos and hybrids will functionally eliminate the high mileage cars. I know I wouldn’t own either of those outside of a warranty.

I think they really missed the boat with this one. The gx and the Land Cruiser used to share a market, now the Land Cruiser and the 4Runner will share. They had a real opportunity to differentiate and not disrupt other lines but they just watered down the existing offerings with this model.

I actually like the side-hinged door. Although my favorite version was on the mid-90s Isuzu Trooper I had back in the day because it was split 3/4-1/4 so you didn't have to open the full width 95% of the time. The "old" GX also has the lift-up glass that we probably use at least 50% of the time when loading and unloading the GX.

A split would be nice. I can’t stand the full door because I can’t open it in the garage without pulling forward. I’m also nervous that someone in the parking lot is going to text while driving their way into it while I’m loading groceries. I also can’t have my Kuat bike rack on and open the door, the tilt function is worthless with the barn door. I probably use the glass 90% of the time. I’m actually excited to have a lift gate.
