Get out your porti-power, or your ener-pac, figure how you can even clamp it tight enough for the experiment( pro-tip, just use threaded rod), of any quality you want.
Pull it until it breaks, then look at the ends of it.

Sorry if a repost, but holy cow. This guy died in front of his wife and kids when a drop hitch broke and shot thru the windshield. Horrible. Hopefully someone will see this and not try it.

The dumbest thing I've done in recent years was getting drunk and trying to dig up an old fence post in the backyard. I finally got pissed off and tied a tow strap around the post and hitched it to my truck. The old metal fence post broke off from the concrete and flew into the back of my truck.

Seriously though, I'm surprised you asked about the Quikrete before asking about the air.

I just read the OP, and looked at the pics.

Has someone pointed out that the incredibly large amount of drop was destined to fail? That's the cheater pipe of drop hitches.

They thought they were getting a physics class on collision of masses and ended up with a physics class about leverage.

The same kind of accident killed the owner of Roadrunner Towing in Baton Rouge a few years ago.

If they hooked it to the actual receiver then he’d be alive. A hitch isn’t designed for that.

I mean, the fact that it happened to him and not the owner of Riverside Towing could be proof that God is a myth.

Why's that? I never really thought about it much. I just always assumed a chain would be less prone to violent whipping failure than a cable.

you are sort of correct in your thinking, but when chain breaks the broken link will more than likely come off the rest of the chain so it is sort of like a bullet except larger. Wire rope will snap back in the same way but if you are in a vehicle you will more than likely be protected from the recoil. Wire rope does have more of a stretch in it as well.

ETA- The safest way to recover a vehicle this stuck is a winch. If the winch doesn't have the strength use as many snatch blocks as it takes. If you are ever in a situation where you have to jerk on something it would be better to use soft shackles, kinetic rope and hook to the recovery hooks on the front of the recovery vehicle and pull in reverse.

I tried to pull a guy out of mudhole one night and the chain snapped. My buddy told me to roll down my rear glass in my Bronco. Chain would have blown out my rear window. It did major dent damage to my tailgate.

This is the correct answer. Unfortunately, these folks found out the hard way that "hit it harder" is not the answer.

From the pictures on the front page, looks like the steel failed due to high torque/torsion. Chevron marks on the outside indicate failure started on the outside moving inward. The material also shows no ductility indicating brittle fracture.

This guy died because someone tried to tow him out with a drop hitch made from cheap, weak steal. The combined stress from a bend and stretch load overloaded the steel and instantaneously fractured brittle.

Normal duty stuff it's hard to beat B&W or bulletproof for adjustable ones. Other than that pick any of them that are solid and not hollow. Curt, Maxxhaul and Reese are ones we've vetted, they're typically cheaper, non-adjustable height but robust and can take the industrial abuse.

Late to this thread.

Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery did a really good video on this accident and provided some rules of thumb and equipment suggestions.

Worth a watch if you do any sort of recovery.
