Yeah I almost never recover with the hitch unless it is a super obvious light load. If I think there is any real load I go a different way.
Like the article states over "engineering" a recovery makes sure everyone returns.

Damn. That's a rough one.

Why be in the truck at all? Neutral it and back up.

Sad thing is he has that heavy duty bar below the receiver. That’s where the tow rope should have been attached

All you gotta do is put the strap loops where the hitch receiver is and put the pin in.
Yeah. I’d be willing to bet that they had the strap hooked to the ball instead of at the base of the receiver. On the ball end would create MUCH more leverage/force on the hitch and break it.

I bet the 37th person who cracked their shin on that fricker was what weakened it to the point of failure.

A few things of note:
That hitch has a lot of drop, and appears to possibly be home made. Was likely severely overloaded.
They likely "snatched" on the truck to try to get it out. With a regular strap, cable, etc that's a very extreme amount of force. Never snatch on something without a strap specifically made for it

That’s why you use synthetic rope with a wet towel draped over the middle

Exactly what happened. If they had choked the strap around the top where it comes straight out of the receiver it wouldn't have happened.

Just curious, but why would you be in the stuck truck at all during the recovery?

This is the stuff of baw nightmares.

PSA:
Never buy jack stands or tow hitches/tow equipment from Harbor Freight.
I have a HF floor jack I've used for years that has never had a problem. I'm still overly careful with it.

Maybe even use you a snatch block. And I ain’t talking about the wife kind of snatch block, the actual metal one with a wheel on it and stuff.

If it snaps the towel will catch some of the recoil. Helps deaden the force coming at you. Redirects it downward toward the ground. I’ve see a heavy jacket used also

They actually make recovery blankets also known as winch cable dampers.
