high risk areas are usually associated with tons of reports of strong tornadoes, hence the HIGH RISK, i think they should've stuck with moderate

I think high was justified:

quote:

5-HIGH (magenta) - High risk - An area where a severe weather outbreak is expected from either numerous intense and long-tracked tornadoes or a long-lived derecho-producing thunderstorm complex that produces hurricane-force wind gusts and widespread damage. This risk is reserved for when high confidence exists in widespread coverage of severe weather with embedded instances of extreme severe (i.e., violent tornadoes or very damaging convective wind events).

We've seen a derecho occur across the northern part of the risk area, and we've had at least two long-track tornadoes and multiple warnings throughout the day. Is it as bad as it could have been? No, probably not. Has it been pretty intense? Yes, it certainly has.

About what size are these tornadoes classified on the Fujita scale? I'm not familiar with how they classify a tornado. The Jena and Alexandria tornadoes seem to be extremely large to me.

It's based on the damage they do, but their actual size is a pretty decent indicator in most cases.

they're classified afterwards by the damage they cause

Alexandria damage I've seen... when it came in the city I'd guesstimate EF2ish... but I haven't ventured out into the damage pate yet

Tornadoes are not rated based on size, they are rated based on the damage they do (how severe that damage is). They then use the damage to determine approximate wind speed that the tornado had and the width of the tornado.

Survey teams from the National Weather Service will survey the damage from those tornadoes tomorrow and determine a Fujita Scale rating.

It appears.

Jena has had a helluva day. Two significant tornados within 10 miles of the city, and they're about to be smoked by straight-line winds from the derecho headed their way...
