Make TOPS recipients stay in state for minimum of four years after graduation or they have to pay it back.

My daughter moved to Houston after graduation. The difference in salaries was 20k a year. She would be able to pay it back and still have a net gain.

And La would still have no workforce.

Yes, and because that is such a stupid thing to do, TOPS in La. is sure to continue for many years.

This makes sense but someone will find a legal way around it.

TOPS just needs to go away or raise the requirements to get it to disqualify about 80% of the students that have it

This is another reason why i truly didn’t understand the support for JBE.

Trying to blame his hardships on Jindal was deflecting the truth. JBE is killing the states economy and it is just plainly obviously

Proposal: turn it into a state funded loan. Live for two years (after graduating) in the state of Louisiana and the loan is forgiven.

You can spend those two years working, volunteering, or going to grad school (which TOPS does not pay for). But it has to be in Louisiana.

By the time two years have passed, a lot of people will end up getting married or starting a business - and will then be rooted to the state.

Yea their needs to be some overhauls to TOPS. I don’t know what the answer is but it’s not working as intended right now.

It’s not TOPS fault that Louisiana has a shitty economy.

Very similar to my sister. 30k salary difference between Baton Rouge and Houston right out of college. Her decision to move was easy. Especially when you add in cheaper car insurance and no state income tax.

Well we voted to keep a governor in office that’s not business friendly that actually suspended TOPS a month before the fall semester last year. So obviously LA doesn’t care.

Do not tell me TOPS is a good thing because it is not and it's possible to get a fine education without it.

Despite your anecdotal experience, I am telling you exactly that.

We just have to disagree on this. I think TOPS is one of the few things Louisiana does correctly.

Convert TOPS to a loan. No payments made during school. When you graduate, if you maintain residence in LA, then the state makes your payments on a 5 yr payment plan. If you leave early, the state stops making payments

What happens if you had TOPS, graduated and go to work in Louisiana. After a few years, you are offered a promotion contingent on a transfer ?

Kill TOPS and use the money saved to give businesses tax incentives to move to Louisiana

Either end TOPs or revert it back to the privately funded Taylor plan, designed to assist New Orleans inner city public school students.

Any “conservative” that supports this entitlement and bitches about hand outs is a two faced bastard.

TOPS was meant to educate our best and brightest regardless of income.

It was never designed to keep graduates from college home.

A governor that knows how to actually grow the economy rather than just tax more.

We had the chance to elect one earlier this month in Eddie Rispone, especially a businessman that managed to create a company that clears 350 million annually with his own two hands and brain.

But no, we decided four more years of the political twin of Edwin Edwards was a good idea.

The next four years are going to be an incredibly frustrating waste of time that 774,498 voters stuck us with including some of who fraudulently describe themselves as "conservative".

You get what you vote for Louisiana.

This thread has a lot of freeloaders that are proud of ripping off the taxpayers and bragging about how they got their taxpayer funded degree and moved out of state.

Just incredibly disgusting.

And a lot of those welfare queens call themselves "conservative".

A great example of why I won't be upset if TOPS eventually goes away.

No it's not, NY already does this.

Especially when there's no strict guidelines. Example, I used Post 9/11 to pay my school. The VA only paid for classes that were required or allowed in my degree program. I've seen TOPS people at LSU taking bare minimum full time status classes, some of which aren't for their degree, but because it's time convenient or easy. They probably switch majors a million times.

How much TOPS money is pissed away for people who don't graduate after changing majors 7 times in 3 years. TOPS has people going to LSU, some of who have no business there, majoring in STEM, failing out because they can't pass calculus, then doing business and failing out of that. This is what happens when you give a check to a kid who graduated high school with a 2.5.
