Maybe if your politicians weren’t so shitty to businesses then your state could attract graduates from Texas.

There certainly aren't enough stem jobs in Louisiana. I came to LSU for a graduate degree and moved back to texas with a job here. There was nothing there, so it meant spending 2 years apart from my wife while she finished up her program. Luckily she got a job in Dallas too when she finished.

i can't speak to the engineering side of STEM in LA but as for tech, there are a lot of tech jobs in LA, they just suck. i legit doubled my salary moving to texas. some of that accounts for cost of living in a given market, i guess, but still. whats the incentive to stay when you're leaving serious money on the table?

Recent grads are leaving because of the job scene in Louisiana. Either they can't find a job, or the job they find in Texas pays them significantly more.

Why does tops exist?

To avoid all of the Section 8 housing that is inevitably headed to Baton Rouge regardless.

TOPS is not the problem.

It's the crumbling economy and a complete misuse of tax dollars that's the problem. TOPS is a good investment as long as you have something to offer graduates when they are done with school.

Yep. Where are all these jobs people here demand tops recipients stay in state to fill?

Ya, that sort of requirement seems like a good way to disincentivize high quality students to attend LSU.

Yep. I cannot think one one LA company that would be my ultimate goal from the jump start of freshman year. 30 years ago, I could.

Most obvious.

Eta: I used Louisiana National Guard to fund my school before I left for Texas.

TOPS should have a requirement that you have to stay in LA for a set period of time.

Otherwise, it makes zero financial sense for the state.

Yep. Just keeps more classier brand of kid drinking at Reggie's and the House. In 10 years, Reggie's will be that bar where you might get kilt.

Yea their needs to be some overhauls to TOPS. I don’t know what the answer is but it’s not working as intended right now.

Yep. Making gaining an education more expensive is the answer. Not having more jobs in Louisiana, that would be a dumb idea

They would stay here if there were jobs here. Louisiana is producing more college graduates than there are jobs to fill them. That pushes the glut of graduates to Texas.

The problem is Louisiana is relying on tops alone to draw kids to schools instead of using tops to keep kids coming while we actually improve the education system and create opportunities for students. Just another way the state won’t get out of its own way

Clearly there does.

Hope you weren’t a TOPS recipient yourself.

Happy thanksgiving
