It’s pretty awesome for a twenty-something year old female, too. Easy transition from SLa culture-wise, good food, large population of young, single professionals, many well-paying jobs and live music every night (except Tuesday for some reason).

3. Create TOPS employment credit, give employers a tax credit for hiring TOPS grads

Really? You want to pay employers to hire millennials instead of older folks that didn’t have TOPS?

The benefit and clawback terms should be between the TOPS recipients and the state. No need to introduce more BS.

Clawback should be pro-rated. Pick a duration (4 years, 10 years, etc) and make new recipients agree to it as part of the terms.

There is something called the work opportunity tax credit, that gives credits if you hire welfare recipients, so I was thinking of something like this but for TOPS.

It wouldn’t be a forever giveaway, it would be time limited to the first few months of employment to help cover the final touches getting the employee ready for work in your business. An employer could only claim the credit if the employee was hired within 6 months of graduation.

I also forgot to add things on my dream list because they may never happen in this administration:

Make Louisiana a more Corporate Tax friendly state
Tort reform
Fight local corruption, and pay to play schemes

I attended LSU on a full scholarship from 1984-1988. I moved to Florida in 1989 because there were NO JOBS in Louisiana.

Some things never change.

I attribute it 100% to Louisiana politics. The elected officials in Louisiana are socialists for the most part. They hate prosperity and bend over backwards to keep as many people as possible dependent on government handouts.

I wish it had worked out differently. I’ve always missed living in Louisiana.

Taxpayers just need to bend over and subsidize more chemical plants. More attention to our chemical plant economy will take care of it.

TOPS should be loan forgiveness, not subsidized tuition.

Top 5% of graduates from Louisiana schools get loan forgiveness (State credits your income taxes and pays up to a certain dollar amount over the credit) for up to 10 years as long as they work and live in Louisiana. If you graduated top 2% of your class from a top 50 school you get loan forgiveness from the state.

Keep and recruit the smartest students.

Is this really an indictment of the state government’s commitment to TOPS or is it an indictment of the state government creating a less than business friendly environment in our state?

If there are no quality jobs in the state for a person, why would they stay?

Exactly

In the competition between stated La. has some advantages; yet we repeatedly finish near the bottom of the rankings.

The fix is not simple. We need to be objective and figure out why and take the steps to make La. competitive.

If you graduated while utilizing tops and then move out of state, you should have to pay it back. It's a horrible investment for the LA.

Maybe Louisiana should figure out the problem and fix it. Obviously there is a reason that no one wants to stay. Why would they?

you’re being sarcastic, but higher wages without illegal competition and more money in pockets instead of going to Allstate may indeed have us booming

What a stupid and uninformed comment.

LA doesn’t have the jobs to even support something like that. How exactly do you plan to keep all these unemployed TOPS graduates busy and contributing?

Fix La’s business climate....

Fix La’s education, taxation, insurance, crime, quality of life, you know all the things we rank low in...

Wasn’t tops created to keep the STUDENTS from leaving...
