I would also encourage you guys to look at ISDS.

I've worked in the IT industry for 15+ years and can say without a doubt that an LSU ISDS degree > LSU Comp Sci degree.

In today's IT industry, you pretty much have to have some type of business knowledge / acumen, and ISDS prepares you much better for that. You might not get as much hard core technical knowledge, but that stuff is constantly changing and all you need is an aptitude and willingness to learn the "latest and greatest".

The last 2 ISDS grads that I hired have been outstanding performers. The Comp Sci guys are frequently lost in business meetings.

A family member of mine, very smart kid, went to Rose Hulman. It's in Indiana, but he got pretty good job offerings. Very good school. He's got some kind of computer engineering degree.

We probably know each other. I've worked in the field for about 15 years and was an ISDS major

Yeah..thats a major concern when hiring.

It was substandard when I got my degree in 05. My buddy had a 4.0 and was rocking a job at IBM quickly. He was an exception. I would aspire to programs like Carnegie Mellon, MIT and Cal-Berkeley. Obviously those are some of the creams of the crop. I wanted in CM but never applied and probably didn’t have a shot at actually being accepted either.

It’s not terrible it’s just not close to being a top program in the country.

I was wondering if that really was housing attached to the ibm building.

Yeah, when I interviewed they said that they have apartments connected to the building.

I here you. You learn most of the same material. like I said my friend had a bunch of offers out of LSU but he is one those people who just get it without much effort and his work ethic is well above average.

I had a 3.3 and very few options so I went to law school. Which I also discourage as much as possible.

LSU is also in the process of upgrading its ISDS program. My father is on the board and my younger sister(no pics) just graduated in ISDS. She had multiple job offers each one upwards of 70k. Great job market potential.

Yea, I wouldn’t have made this thread if those were options

Just my opinion but he can load up on certifications and the institution issuing his degree won't mean as much. Some of the best developers I've worked with went to a 2 year tech school. It's an odd field because you either have an aptitude for it or you don't. If he wants to get into management eventually they'll typically prefer a degree.

If you want to make real $$$ become a DBA. I think LSU has a fast paced Masters program. Good DBA’s are hard to find and can easily make 100K plus few years out of school.

We have dba's, systems engineers, network engineers, cloud architects making 100k+ in lowly Baton Rouge. Obviously these are people in more Sr positions with a lot of experience (definitely not the average salaries)

IBM office is a consultancy service. It's a staffing that hires and consults. Not a game changer. If he is good, there are lot of better schools for Computer engineering like Ut austin, wisconsin, cal tech

I took a job that thousands applied for out of College. Turned out that they were hiring 3 college kids for the first time ever. This was at the time the 3rd most powerful Super Computing facility in the world run by a team of 30. They ended up hiring 2 from LSU.

That said. CSC at LSU at least when i was there before it was rolled up into engineering was not the strongest program but moreso due to lack of funding. The chair spend all the money on his robotics lab nobody gave a shite about. Undergrads had better labs in the public lab than the CSC lab. But there were a lot of strong students.
