This isn’t hard. Some of you are fricking stupid and pearl clutching here. Is AI a threat? Sure. Will it one day be legit dangerous? I think so. But this clearly troubled kid taking an RPG chatbot seriously, severely misinterpreting what it was saying, and killing himself isn’t anywhere near a good example of that. But let’s not let these facts get in the way of an old fashioned OML freakout/meltdown thread.

Thank God for some logic and reason.

I hate to say it, but maybe if this happens enough, parents/adults will begin to see how dangerous untethered internet access is to children and teens.

Maybe the government will remake the "this is your brain on drugs," fried egg commercials from the 80s to "this is your brain with unlimited internet."

Yeah, put a warning label on it while you’re at it. You know that would only make them want it more.

We’re on the cusp where we need to take this shite seriously. Within the decade, AI will be more intelligent than our entire species combined, and that will happen before we fully realize it.

You’re right but the two aren’t mutually exclusive. This situation isn’t an indicator of the former, this is simply bad parenting

Well duh! It’s been part of the plan all along to disassociate with another. First the internet? Then Covid, now AI. There is no united in the United States. Thats long gone.

As for this? I highly doubt the company will be held liable. But if worse comes to worse? A little settlement to shut them up. A solution? When your kids hiding in the bedroom too damn long? It’s time to check on him and see wtf is going on
