A new report from The Cashlorette analyzed median incomes and unemployment rates for U.S. adults with only a bachelor’s degree across 173 different majors, ranking the most valuable ones in today’s marketplace. The report reveals that if you really want to cash in on your college experience, you better have a knack for math.
After crunching the numbers, The Cashlorette’s report found that the top five most valuable college majors this year are (drumroll please):
1. Petroleum Engineering
2. Pharmacy Pharmaceutical Sciences/Administration
3. Geological/Geophysical Engineering
4. Mining/Mineral Engineering
5. Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering
The five least valuable college majors, according to the report, are:
169. Studio Arts
170. Human Services/Community Organization
171. Composition/Rhetoric
172. Miscellaneous Fine Arts
173. Clinical Psychology
To put all this in perspective, Petroleum Engineering (the most valuable major) has a median income of $134,840.88 and an unemployment rate of 2.38 percent. Meanwhile, Clinical Psychology (the least valuable major) has a pretty scary unemployment rate of 8.06 percent and a median income of $43,092.81.

This means nothing when a new grad can't get a job.

This is a little surprising. I wouldn't expect it to be toward the top, but below things like "Miscellaneous Fine Arts" is a bet I would have lost.

They're definitely nearly all employed, but not even close to all of them as actual Petroleum Engineers.

Yeah I don't think that unemployment rate is legit, unless they're counting PETE grads who work outside the industry

What do you do with this degree and no graduate education?

A lot of engineering on that list. It's a shame so much money goes to nerds who won't do anything cool with it.

Even though I'm a civil, I almost took a job as an FE in cementing in 2012. In hindsight I'm glad I didn't. Probably would have got laid off very soon after with the downturn.
