I am admittedly particular to the Arizona mountains, and I'd take Tucson everyday over Phoenix. Love the resorts around there, the golf, the weather, and not relatively expensive. It also has that funky college town feel.

I used to live an hour south of Tucson outside of Bisbee. I love that area but Tucson is too hot and dusty for me. Definitely close to some great areas though.

If cost of living wasn’t an issue I would love to live in Los Angeles, Copenhagen, or Montreal.

All these people saying Barcelona, but it is NOT a livable city. Just because you visited one time on a backpacking trip doesn't make it a good place to live. 
Now Copenhagen -- this is a very livable city. Probably one of the best in Europe along with Vienna.

It's like the San Francisco of Spain.
Still, though, Spain is so damn cheap, even Barcelona is like about what Atlanta or Chicago would cost. Great public trans as well, thanks to the Olympics.
You can get a good 2 BR in Barcelona for about half a million - that's more Houston/Chicago/Atlanta territory than it is NYC/DC/SF/LA.

Definitely, but Copenhagen would feel small after a little while. The metro area is about the same size as Louisville, Birmingham, or Memphis.
I haven't been, but from what I've heard, Berlin is actually a very cool and livable city.

To be fair, I'm going to answer this question as if proximity to family and friends doesn't matter. I'm also going to only include U.S. cities that can reasonably considered to be large, and not those with 200K+ population.

Have you seen the articles about the locals protesting the tourist hordes? Seriously, they can't even breathe. Nobody can actually live in the city center. It is completely untenable. Chicago and Atlanta don't suffer from this issue. They have tourism, but not suffocating tourism.

Admittedly, I don't have a terrible lot of sympathy for this. A lot of people want to visit your city - I'd take that as a compliment (and I do, as a Chicagoan - our tourist numbers actually exceed Barcelona's annually - about 50MM compared to about 32MM in the most recent numbers I could find).

It's all relative. For a metro area of Barcelona's size, it has very good public trans in my eyes. It's about 3 times the size of Cope and 2.5 times the size of Vienna - it's like comparing the Tube to Cope. I look at the metro regions in comparable size in Europe - Hamburg, Rome, Cologne, Madrid, Warsaw, Naples, Duesseldorf, Rome, Ruhr - and only a few of the German areas clearly exceed it. It far, far outstrips even the best American metro areas of that size (Seattle, Denver, Phoenix, Miami, etc.) in that vein. Yea, it's hot, but it's tolerable - I've experienced it enough.

I didn't bring this up to elicit sympathy, but to illustrate how many locals find life in the city center to be less and less tenable. Seriously, read some of the articles. I can't speak to Chicago's tourism industry, only what I know about Barcelona.

It is more about technology than scale. Vienna and Copenhagen have modern efficient systems. Barcelona has shite.
