Nothing has cemented that more for me than becoming a teacher. they dont care, they dont want to care, nothing can make a good majority of them care. Im 5 years removed from high school and don't remember it being near this bad.

What do you teach? What level? Low level? Honors? AP?

Said every generation about the next generation since the beginning of time.

I wouldn't care if my teacher was dicking off on TD all day too

One tier 2 Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. It transcends grade or education level. there's just no drive or motivation for success in any of them.

The future yutes will see how weak the current yutes are.
We'll be fine.
We'll be fine.

Teachers being persuaded that giving out zeroes for grades is unfair is absurd.

Just enjoy the sex like all the other teachers

None of the students want to bang you huh?

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers. Socrates

Just sleep with one. That will motivate them. All the cool teachers are doing it

I knew the youth were doomed over 20 years ago when I was in college with plans on becoming a teacher. After the first few semesters, I figured out that I wouldn't have the proper temperament to teach kids then (or now). I'd last a week before I would end up punching one of the bastards and get fired (or prison time) so I switched majors.

This is called being a teenager. Algebra is fricking boring. You were the exact same way, you just don't remember because you have bills now.

I am in my 7th year of teaching and it all depends on where you teach. I taught at an all black inner city school for 2 years and they were worst than what you described, but that was the culture of the town and school.
I now teach at a small rural country school and I love my job. I teach Western civ 102 dual enrollment (12th graders) and World geo (11th graders) and I would say 97% really care about what they are doing. What this does is causes the other 3% to care more than they usually would because they dont want to look bad, they want to be like the majority.

It's a teacher's job to not just give the student the information to succeed but also help with motivation. You can't obviously.

I think OP has a fairly valid point, although every generation has said this to some degree. The difference is this generation has social media and that only exacerbates the problem by making kids more in-tune with eachother at all times, at school and home.
It's not "cool" to put effort into anything or be studious. The less you appear to care about anything, the cooler you are - in the eyes of kids today. Other kids that put effort into things like school work, extracurriculars, and hobbies that aren't deemed popular are made fun of in person AND online.
There is simply no escaping it these days, which is the difference.
