Similar boat, we bought land with a crappy house with intentions to build. Building right now in the Birmingham area is a no go for us.

It makes me pause and remember the stories that my Grandfather would tell me about being an adult during the 1930s and how they lived/got by. It is tough now, but this is nothing compared to that decade+.

That's the problem, the rates went up drastically and the prices don't reflect... yet.

I don't know...I think inflation has won this battle. Today's salaries don't keep up.
House all time highs
trucks and suvs at all time highs
Groceries at all time highs
Fuel at the top end of their highs
Interest rate is mid.

Gen Z and younger generations have gotten absolutely fricked
Their economic outlook, as a whole, is bleak
Inflation, astronomical college prices, wage stagnation, and competing with a global job candidate pool is going to turn them into a bitter class of serfs if something doesn’t change soon.

Something has to give. Wife and I got lucky coming out of school during the COVID craze with inflation rates low and got a nice house with a great rate. We have both changed jobs since then and started looking at moving across town in Birmingham to be closer to work daycare etc. we make over 100k more than we did in 2021 and yet when I look at mortgage rates now and approximate payment we honestly would struggle to buy the exact same house we have right now much less anything nicer. I know it’s a first world problem and we do have 2 young kids that everything is expensive for but we are both pretty frugal in general and take maybe 1 beach vacation a year.
All this makes me really think of people who don’t have great jobs and how in the heck they can afford to scrape by if they have kids. I honestly don’t know how they do it.
The "things" that young people need like housing, healthcare, education and daycare have gone up far more than the simple cost of living based on the CPI over the last 40-50 years.....most people older than 50 or so will say some stupid shite like "get a better job" or "you just have unrealistic expectations" but the fact is while inflation is about what it always has been things that young families and young people need to make it to being grumpy old men and women are way more expensive today than when we were young.
I have a contract with a project that pays probably 200% or more of similar jobs in the area. The prime contractor is doing a bunch of things to attract young talent because their workforce is nearly all retirement age. Professionals. I was in a meeting with several of these young new hires 2 weeks agd and a senior VP who is almost 70. After the main discussion was over he asked those young people "we have some time left, do any of you have any ideas how we can recruit young employees". A couple of them did indeed...one asked about the daycare idea that had been floated a year or so ago and another asked about tele-working to take care of a sick child. The 70 year old Sr VP's answer "I know its rough, but my wife and I did it". The man asked and dismissed out of hand in about 5 minutes. You'd think the answer would be "It was tough when my wife and I did it and I am doing what I can so y'all don't have to go through that tough period"....given that their company pays a lot of lip service to recruiting young talent. I am 61 but I saw the reaction in those young people's eyes....."time to freshen up the resume and start looking". You'd think more older people would remember how hard it was and instead of saying 'toughen up buttercup" they'd at least acknowledge that it is far harder on young families than it was when we were young...

A generation of underemployed, destitute, and bitter men is a recipe for disaster for any power structure…but with the structure’s incentives and morals as they are, they are not likely to do an about face out of some long sighted concern. It’ll keep puttering along until it can’t.

Just claim yourself as an illegal alien and get everything for free.
Why work and pay taxes?
Corruption pays trillions of our taxpayer dollars.

There is a reason that sooooo many of them, when asked by polsters, are not as enamored with capitalism as boomers and Gen X was.....because the excesses of the last 40 or so years are their inheritance. I am 61 and I fully intend to "gets mine" just like most boomers and Gen Xers....but I also know for certain that it is harder for young people today than it was 50 years ago because the things that young people NEED are far more expensive than inflation would suggest over that 40 years.

It is silly to pretend this current cost of living situation isn't the result of Covid. At least you have a good mortgage rate though.
* To be more precise, the response to Covid.

Ron Paul tried to tell us about the Federal Reserve and unending inflation in 2008 and 2012.
I was 25-29 in those years, but he led me down a path of frustrating enlightenment about monetary policy and The Federal Reserve.
News flash: it will never get better.

Alot of family financial management comes down to where you draw the line on needs and wants and how you define a need.
A need is shelter but living in a home you cannot afford is a want.
People live beyond their means and take on debt.

Gen z age range is 14-29. All of them are currently working age.
How many of them are getting that foot in the door working a lower job instead of sitting at home? Why do we need immigrants if we have this generation of people without jobs?
