<---- 34 years for me soon in the "Dead Dad Club".

He was a good dude, he did the best he could with the situations he was presented in life.

While I miss him and am still sad about him leaving early, I'm OK with it now.

Whenever I listen to "Willie's Roadhouse" on XM and hear random songs I remember he liked and get the feels.

I have the same feeling for my Dad, 25 years ago, it never goes away.

RIP to your Father I'm certain he was a great one.

As assholish as your response sounds, I’ve sacrificed everything for my sons…. Emptied my soul and neglected myself entirely over the prime years of my life so they could have everything. Part of me fears that as soon as they become men, they will resent me and avoid me the way you clearly avoid your father- who likely gave everything for you.

Condolences, but if that's the worst thing that's happened to you, you've been fortunate.

I didn’t realize there were 3000 people in Athens 45 years ago. I bet I know some of your people there. It was a small town when I was in school. Your father must have been amazing for that kind of response. I am sorry for your loss.

We weren't from Athens, we really lived closer to Madison, but we knew there would be a big attendance. He was a popular man.
McConnell Funeral home had the best facilities to handle it, but it wasn't enough.
People came from Huntsville, Decatur, Madison, all of Limestone County. Black, white, green, they all showed up.
I didn't even own a proper suit at the time. A certain tailor shop back then, made one for me. In 48 hours free of charge.

Unfortunately, you are kind of right, that was just the beginning and a sort of wake up call, but of all the things that ever happen, that hurts the worst. Especially the First week of December.
One of My favorite lines in a song:" Wish I didn't Know now, what I didn't Know then"- Bob Seger
From those days on, I knew what to expect.

What really sucks is when your parent never saw your child/children.

I bet you ask anyone in that situation what their top three wishes are and just behind their child's health would be a day with your late parent and your children.

Sucks

You know exactly what I'm talking about.
Dad was a Johnny Horton, Elvis, and Buck Owens fan.
I think that's why I like Dwight Yokem so much.

So my mom recently passed away and I am struggling to find a good gift to get my pop. I want it to be special. Any ideas are welcome.

I wish I knew how to answer this, but I don't.
Just bring your kids to see him probably.

My father literally died the day my stepmother rolled into the scene. Been many decades. Just here and there get togethers. Mostly at her approval.
I probably won’t give a shite when he’s gone. I love my children a whole lot and can’t imagine being without them.

So sorry man, cannot even imagine. Was at work one day, when co-worker (close friend) got a call about step sister. Heart wrenching, will never forget that.

In that case, carry on his memory, he's with you everyday.

It'll be 53 years for me at the end of January. I was 9 years old then.

Song for your pops

I love this song, but I can tell you, My Dad never had a reason to have any doubts. We spent as much time together as possible.
Most of the time we ate our lunch like farm hands, there were good days though. He'd take me to a cafe now and then.
We got mad at each other too, but we would get over it.

Gifts:
A good strong shoe horn so he won't have to bend over as far in the morning.

A good flashlight for beside his bedstead.

Is there a wedding picture of the two of them that could be worked on and made fresher or sharper?

My Godfather's favorite Christmas present was a studio portrait of his big ole' doberman named Danger.

If you or your wife are good with a needle thread and a sewing machine, a day of repairs to clothes and linens is a way to spend time together. (Been there done that)

My dad is 85 and I love every conversation with him. He’s sharp as can be, and a huge LSU fan. I dread him leaving us, and I’m sure I’ll be counting the days like you are.
If I get to 45 years, I’ll be 90. I’ll still miss him.
