The jungle: Here I was born: and here my parents died when I was but an infant. I would have soon perished, too, had I not been found by a kindly she-ape named Kala, who adopted me as her own and taught me the ways of the wild. I learned quickly, and grew stronger each day, and now I share the friendship and trust of all jungle animals. The jungle is filled with beauty, and danger: and lost cities filled with good, and evil. This is my domain, and I protect those who come here: for I am Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle

I have all 24 books of Burroughs' Tarzan series. I nearly wore them out reading and re-reading them when I was a kid. I had become pretty fluent in speaking the language of the great apes and was horribly disappointed when, on my first visit to the Audubon Zoo, I found that the apes there understood not a word of it. Dad explained to me that it was probably because they were raised in captivity and were not given a proper ape (mangani) education.

Bit of ERB trivia: Did you know that the name Tarzan means "white skin" in the language of the great apes?

Tarzana is a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, California. Tarzana is on the site of a former ranch owned by author Edgar Rice Burroughs. It is named after Burroughs' fictional jungle hero, Tarzan.
quote:

In February 1919, Edgar Rice Burroughs, author of the popular Tarzan novels, relocated to California from Oak Park, Illinois. He and his family had wintered in Southern California twice before, and he found the climate ideal. On March 1, 1919, Burroughs purchased Otis's tract and established Tarzana Ranch. Burroughs subdivided and sold the land for residential development, some parcels of which were utilized as small farms.
