This kind of statement has to be taken with a grain of salt in that everyone shown in any article as being associated with that company, including the CEO, looks to be a 50s year old white guy.

I sense a common theme… the significance isn’t “50 yr old, whiiiiite or male.” but experience.

Experience involves time. Not skin color, or sex, but hands on time learning & doing related work that applies to the job.

If the fact that those who have the experience are also white & male, so be it.

You’d be foolish to dismiss the qualifications of a Sherpa when climbing in the Himalayas because they didn’t check off the appropriate diversity boxes.

You & the ceo both are oblivious, it seems.

I don't know shite about underwater communication and I understand the depth here is an issue, but why would a simple device to at least send like a morse code signal not work underwater? I guess my point is, if there is absolutely no communication would that not almost definitely be an indication they are dead? I can understand why you don't want to bang on the hull at that depth, but could you not have a device inside that is ran off a separate back up battery?

It seems absolutely absurd to me that all communication is lost if they are possibly still alive, when sound travels very well underwater?

I've been one of his biggest supporters, even though I had to explain to him in another thread that the shark that was in Jaws was mechanical and not claymation...

And he referred to us as Neanderthals!

Motherhumping acoustical nerd.

I don't know why some of you are focuing on that comment when it's clear as day this CEO was going to force the sub out come hell or high water. He clearly skirted saftey and testing the entire way through, was told the sub had serious flaws and shouldn't be used, and got cheap on materials b/c he either didn't want to wait or didn't want to pay.

This thing was doomed from the get go no matter who his engineers were b/c he was never going to accept what he wanted done wasn't possible in the timeline and for the price he demanded.

I mean shite, we have quotes of him bitching about safety regulations as the cherry on top of his mountain of hubris.

I think the USN probably knows when I drop a turd over the side of my boat. I guarantee they know exactly where this happened, exactly when, and whether or not anybody managed to scream before it popped.

This dude ain't qualified to design a swingset, much less a 4000m manned sub.

Tom Scholz is more qualified to design that.

You mean the words spoken by the 50s year old white guy? Yeah, I know.

He's on video discussing who he's hired and why. Oh, but he didn't replace himself, so 'grain of salt.'

Does it bother you that you constantly have to do mental gymnastics to carry water for progressive bullshite? You know it's wrong, but you do it anyway. That's cult-like devotion.

The comms were incredibly sketchy. They lost comms on another voyage it took previously. I think they had a bit of a lax mentality with respect to losing comms. It's just a normal thing to them. Seems bizarre to brush off issues with comms when it's so important, but he also dismissed every warning sign he could.

At that depth and psi, would you be crushed or quickly expanded basically blowing up from the inside? That stuff confuses me. I’ve read that nitrogen in your blood is condensed at depths due to pressure.

On running out of air: They say they are likely to run out of air soon, if they haven’t been breathing to heavy, and pooing in the bucket, stinking up the submersible.

On what happened: I think one of those a-hole Killer Whales from the Iberian Coast is over there being an a-hole.

Seems like we have quite a few acoustic wizards in this thread. What other types of situations would cause those "sounds" to occur?

As other ships arrive at location, it could be anything from ship's bilge pumps, DP thrusters or other low frequency noise sources.

Can't say without knowing the sound's frequency and signal strength compared to the ocean's ambient background noise level there.

It's starting to get "noisy" out there and that's going to be an issue the next few days.
