Got into my hotel last night and there’s a placard with a q code to tip members of the hotel staff.

I just got here, checked in on my phone, have a digital key and went to my room. No one has even helped me with anything yet. WTF

Don't you wanna tip the person that cleans your room for the next guy?

Yeah it's stupid. They make minimum wage or better and that's literally their job. The cost is baked into the cost of the stay.

Tips are supposed to be for going above and beyond, or at least they used to be.

True. But the inherent begging at a lot of public customer points is getting pretty tiresome, no?

Tipping is just the start. The real screwing begins when the hotel tax is applied to your bill.

I went to a pizza place over the weekend that had default tipping suggestions of 20-25-30%.

This was an order from a tablet, pick up pizza at the counter, seat yourself, and even a self serve beer tap kind of place. Lastly, you even had clean your own table.

My tip was $0.00.

just got back from a couple of weeks in Europe, five countries, had some really nice meals with some pretty high tabs, drinks in a lot of cool places, not once was a tip expected nor asked for, in two retaurants rthere was a 20 Euro coperto charge, which is for table settings, bread, etc., goes to the restaurant, not the servers, and has to be listed on the menu that it will be charged

I would rather pay that than a valet only $65/night parking fee

not at all, that is an overblown OT misconception, one thing that stuck out to me, on a daily basis, was how friendly, polite, and helpful everyone was, and how untrashy everyone and every place was as compared to back in the US
